I'm trying to imagine this here -- bicyclists who feel their emerging enemy is not drivers, but pedestrians.    So it seems to be, according to this article, about Amsterdam.

(I don't think we're close to having this problem here for quite some time, alas.)

This article seems more about the feelings of cyclists that about what change in traffic conditions or city management philosophy precipitated the need for a change.  I keep thinking the Unions are complaining about change, and I suppose that is news.  But better analysis should have included why this is all happening, and perhaps to share the evidence that something IS actually happening.

In a few places, that might have happened ages ago, but it's not within memory.  In most of town, we're light years away from being bike friendly, so it's not like we'll hit that problem any time soon.

U of M's campus is where it might have happened long ago.  The hill dorms are a better bike distance to central campus than walking distance.  Ages ago, when most of the central campus classes were closer to State Street, the bridge by CCRB might have had a lot more bike traffic than foot traffic.  I remember when I go there in 86 there were a good number of us who biked to central campus.  But even then there were many more people on foot.  I'd have to wonder what the mix might have been like when they built Markley in the late 50s, or during the bike boom of the 70s.  The other Hill dorms had all been there for a while.

Actually, the historic aerial photos at MapWashtenaw show the bridge not there in 1966, but in place by 1979.

And, of course, the diag itself has always had mixed traffic, but it's a 'bikes are permitted but not really welcomed' area.

At some level, hasn’t the bigger picture, that cyclists  and walkers need at times to share the same infrastructure, been present in AA for decades?  Does it really matter that AA cyclists did not have the infrastructure revolving around them?  What I see is that the sharing questions have been with us for a long time: car/bike and bike/walker.  I think we would agree AA and the SEMCOG region don’t have it all settled, but I’m surprised to think Amsterdam has decided their balance needs adjusting.

But honestly, Ken Clark, I don’t know what you are trying to say, you assume nearly totally shared context for example, “that might have happened …”  What exactly might have happened, and what does a bridge have to do with it?  I have a few guesses …  And just in general, if one can’t remember if something happened, that sheds zero light on the historical truth, assuming it is worth knowing.

Jeff Gaynor, I saw a Bird or whatever scooter piloted E on Ashley on the bike lanes, against the direction of traffic.  I could see bike/scooter situations here .
