Hey folks,

Please see below for a serious and time-sensitive threat to the entire bike ecosystem in the US, and take action by Tuesday if you're so inclined.

Tariffs Threaten Bikes, Shops, and Cyclists — We Need Your Voice Before Oct. 21

Adam,

The U.S. Department of Commerce is considering a new tariff expansion that would hit bicycles, e-bikes, and parts with massive 50% tariffs — classifying them as “threats to national security.”

If approved, these tariffs would:

  • Add 50% taxes on steel and aluminum bike frames, components, and e-bikes with motors over 250W imported into the U.S.
  • Stack on top of existing base tariffs and Section 301 tariffs on Chinese imports, raising bike and parts prices even higher
  • Add major administrative burdens for importers to declare material content values

This isn’t just an “industry” problem, it is a direct threat to our cycling community and raises the barrier to entry to our sport. These additional tariffs would make it harder for local bike shops to stay open, for cyclists to afford safe, reliable bikes and bike parts, and for more people to choose cycling as a healthy, sustainable way to get around.

The public comment deadline is Tuesday, October 21 and every voice matters. Here’s how to take action right now (it takes less than 15 minutes):

1️⃣ Submit comments opposing each of the two tariff requests:

2️⃣ Use the PeopleForBikes template and talking points to craft your comments. PeopleForBikes has created excellent resources to help you submit your input.

3️⃣ Personalize your letter — Tell policymakers who you are — whether you’re a cyclist, a bike shop owner, or a support folks who are — and how these tariffs would harm your community.

At LMB, we’re joining PeopleForBikes and the National Bicycle Dealers Association in opposition of these tariffs — because we know this isn’t just about bikes. It’s about freedom, access, and keeping Michigan moving forward.

Let’s make sure decision-makers hear us loud and clear: bikes are not a national security threat. They’re part of the solution.

Thank you for rolling with us every mile of the way. Ride on!

Yours in bicycling,
Andy Rohrer
