Thanks to the Cubs' heroics last night, I guess that Sherm can finally rest in peace.  But does anyone know how he became such a Cubs fan in the first place?  (He wasn't from Chicago, was he?)

Right on the mark, Adam. Stricker would sure be happy today.

I don't know what made him such a Cubbies fanatic and all of his pals who might know are now gone.

ok, so this goes back to the Ferguson Jones v. Ferguson Jenkins discussion a few years ago on Bracksco. We all know that Sherm created the name "Ferguson" Jones or Jenkins.

Ferguson Jenkins was a highly successful and famous pitcher for the Cubs from 1967-1973. I think either Pete Bedard or Sherm or both told me that  they just liked the name Ferguson, so used it. Pete played with it when making the call, many of which I received. Sometimes it was Jones and sometimes it was Jenkins, Pete being a sports guy of course and also knowing that I only cared for the lowly Red Sox (from Boston).

I do not know of any connection between Sherm and Chicago. I really think he just liked the then-famous name Ferguson and added Jones to it (keeping the J). Then Pete got ahold of it and varied the name. Jones was the one that stuck

-Bob Kingston (Mulholland).

For whatever it’s worth, I only remember the name as Ferguson Jones, but it’s interesting to find out where the “Jenkins” came from. Sherm signed off his shows with “This has been a Ferguson Jones production” and the spoof collect calls we all used to make were indeed known around ‘BRU as Ferguson Jones calls.

As a non-sports fan, I’m happy the Cubs took the series. Chicago could use the psych-up.

UNRELATED: if anyone is going to be in, around or traveling to Westport, CT, on Saturday, November 12th, an expanded version of my band (featuring Rob Carlson ’70) is playing at the Voices Café, a regionally well-known coffeehouse-style concert series. Details at www.presenceproductions.com, or details and tickets are at www.voicescafe.org. It’s cheaper to pre-order tickets on-line. You can listen free to our new album here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/robcarlsonthebenefitstre. I’m really trying to pump up some excitement around this; perhaps a mini-‘BRU reunion could break out!

And now back to our regularly-scheduled programming.

I can't shed any light on how Sherm became a Cubs fan, but I do have a relevant anecdote to share. During the years when I worked in production at Channel 10 and Sherm was the PD, I would occasionally hear him placing a call to what I assumed was another Cubs fan. When his friend was unavailable, Sherm would ask the operator to tell him that "Ernie Banks called." For those of you not up on baseball history, Ernie Banks was the star shortstop for the Cubs in the 50s and 60s.
