For readers of this message from or relating to Connecticut, note that the article cites Joseph Lanza, formerly "the opera guy" on WWUH, and his authoritative book, "Elevator Music: A Surreal History of Muzak, Easy-Listening, and Other Moodsong."

You may also remember that in the early days of both WHCN in Hartford and WHIM in Providence, the stations carried Muzak or its director competitor on the sub-carriers.

 

And now, instead of elevator muzak, we have "telescreens" (to borrow George Orwell's term), those constantly blabbering all-news or all-sports outlets - even when the sound is down, the captions are on in most places. There's no escape....
