Hi ladies,

I hope all is well and that your week is off to a great start! I wanted to send an email today to notify everyone that it's Well-Being Week in the Law (WWIL)! The aim of WWIL is to raise awareness about mental health and encourage action and innovation across the profession all year-round to improve well-being. The event originally was named “Lawyer Well-Being Week.” In 2021, it was renamed “Well-Being Week in Law” to be more explicitly inclusive of all of the important contributors to the legal profession who are not lawyers.

Please click on the link above and check out all the events, materials, and resources available via the Institute for Well-Being in Law (IWIL) and local events by the SJC Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being and Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, Massachusetts, including a keynote interview and panel with George Mumford, the Performance Whisperer on Thursday, May 9! I've attached a master calendar of the week's events as well as an activity guide for your review.

Each day of WWIL focuses on a distinct dimension of holistic well-being for legal professionals. Today's theme is "Stay Strong" with a focus on physical well-being:

We hope you're able to participate in some of the week's events!

Best,

Julie & Julia

Happy Friday,

As Well-Being Week in the Law (WWIL) wraps up today, I wanted to provide you all with insights from yesterday's keynote event with George Mumford and local attorneys for those interested! Click the link here for a recorded video of the event. Today, Day 5 of WWIL, focuses on Emotional Well-Being.

“Let’s not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it.” -Vincent van Gogh

Here is a list of resources from the Institute for Well Being on the topic:
  • Retraining Unhelpful Thoughts Activity Guide: Learning to push back on automatic unhelpful thoughts that often flood our minds will help us feel better, enable us to intentionally choose that align with our goals and values, and protect our mental health. Try out two activities to help curb the negative effects of unhelpful thoughts in the Retraining Unhelpful Thoughts Activity Guide.
  • Savoring Positive Experiences Activity Guide: Intentionally engaging in thoughts and behaviors that heighten our good feelings about positive events is strongly related to mental health. It includes anything that generates, intensifies, or prolongs our enjoyment. This Activity Guide will help you assess your own savoring habits and make a plan for more savoring.
  • Managing Mental Health in the Workplace Conversation Guide: Open communication about mental health can reduce stigma, break down barriers, and build trust—which, in turn, promotes long-term, positive behavioral change. The Conversation Guide provides basic tips to give supervisors and colleagues confidence to initiate such conversations.
  • Vanquish Languishing Activity Guide: Offers guidance on how to use evidence-based behavioral activation strategies to incorporate more enjoyable and valued activities into your life to foster greater engagement and vitality and curb depressive symptoms.
Additional information about the week's events can also be found here!

Best,

Julie & Julia
