do you just want to run OSSEC in a virtual machine (VMware vm) or do you want to run the virtual appliance (ELK Stack+OSSEC) in a virtual machine?
If it's the latter, then you probably need to to convert the OVA file into a OVF file, otherwise you'd get an error similar to "Unsupported hardware family..."
I once did this myself when I wanted to run the OSSEC virtual appliance on a ESXi host in a VM, it was a pain, but eventually I got it working....

As you pointed out the versions of OSSEC and ELK (elasticsearch, logstash and kibana) are quite outdated. We wouldn't recommend you using this, instead if you have the chance, why not run it in a docker container instead?

Also, if you intend to run it "all-in-one" meaning OSSEC+ELK please notice that you would need to increase the memory to at least 16GB RAM. After all you want a good performance of your OSSEC/ELK cluster, right? ;)

Do you have Vsphere? Try the option of deploying OVA/OVF template. That should work.

Yes, you should be able to deploy OSSEC-vm on VMWare ESXi 5.5? Have you found any issue?
Remember the OVA file has OSSEC version 2.8.3. If you want to make sure of Wazuh features you can just installed a standard CentOS/Debian and install our OSSEC fork on top of it.
We are doing an effort for documenting this better, please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.
