This is a Linux + JVM issue involving the VLC LUA feature. It can be fixed by disabling LUA, for example
mv /usr/lib/vlc/lua /usr/lib/luax
However this will disable YouTube playback.
It can also be fixed using an alternative Java release, for exampe java 1.6
