Hey folks,
On Saturday, September 8 we will be playing FREE Magic: The Gathering
pack wars (a.k.a. mini-master) with Magic Core Set 2013 booster packs
provided by Wizards of the Coast. Here is how the event will work.
The doors of room MC 2034 will open at 10:30 AM and the event will
start at 11:00 AM. Each tournament will be an eight-player three-round
Swiss tournament (non-elimination), and they will fire as often as
eight players are assembled and ready.
Each player will receive one booster pack and three of each type of
basic land, which will form a fixed-size 30-card deck (with no
sideboard). Players may NOT look at their cards before starting round
1, so packs will be opened and decks built in the presence of the
round 1 opponent. Sleeving is permitted, but must be done carefully to
avoid illegally looking at cards.
Each round is played best 2 games out of 3, according to the usual
rules of Magic. No special rules will be used to account for the
smaller decks, so milling is stronger than usual (and mulligans let
you learn a lot about your deck that you would not otherwise know).
The winner of each match receives a booster pack to add to his or her
pool. After finishing round 1, players may look at their pools and/or
decks as normal. Once a player has received at least one extra pack,
his or her minimum deck size increases to 40 (with no max), and he or
she will build a traditional limited deck (and sideboard) with free
choice of basic land. A few minutes for deck-building will be allotted
after each round. Because of the unusual structure of the tournament,
we will be using the tie-breaking rules normally only used in timed
single-elimination events to decide matches that go past time.
We have enough free product for only FIVE tournaments of eight players
each, plus a final eight-player tournament that has no additional
packs for match winners. Players may not enter any subsequent
tournament before their earlier tournament has finished all three
rounds.
If you would like to pre-register for this event and reserve your spot
(which will be held until 11:00 AM only), please e-mail me off-list
with the following information, on a first-come, first-served basis:
Your full name
Your DCI number
If you do not have a DCI number because you've never played in a Magic
tournament or D&D organized play event before, you can still reserve a
spot by telling me your name and that you need a DCI number.
I look forward to seeing everyone there!
