Hi all,

I've never been huge into magic, but my son is developing an interest, and so I've picked it back up again in order to help him out and get him started.  We've just picked up a substantial amount of cards, but despite a few articles that I've read online, I'm still struggling with how to go about building a decent deck.  I'm sure I have the cards for it, but limiting the selection to only 60 cards ... that's tough.

Anyhow, I was wondering if Friday Night magic was a Noob friendly environment.  Is there an age limit?  My son's 9, and we both have a lot of growing to do, and I was hoping that we might find other souls willing to pass along what wisdom they have gained.

Also, is FNM a weekly tournament or just a group of people getting together to play magic?

Thanks in advance,

Dan and Nick

fnm is a weekly event, you may want to bookmark this page as it has the rooms and time and it does change.
https://sites.google.com/site/watsficmagic/

fnm is noob friendly, when you see the event is standard, its only scars of mirrodin block, innistrad block, m12, and m13. when you see 2hg standard, it is where you play as a team with the partner of your choice. between both decks no more then 4 of the same card in total (such as if you play 4 ponder, you partner cant play any. but if you play only 2 ponder your partner can play upto 2 ponder). usually people also bring traders (rares and foils) to acquire new rares for their decks.

if you have any questions let me know as i have been going to UW fnms and 2hg events for over a year now.

Dan,

Definitely. Aside from a prerelease, FNM is the most entry-level kind
of tournament and is the suggested starting point for players who want
to try out organized play. It's more serious and competitive than a
kitchen-table game of Magic, in the same way that a soccer rec league
is more serious and competitive than playing soccer with some buddies
in the park. Players should already know basically how to play Magic.

There is no age limit and we try to promote a family-friendly
environment, but you should be aware that most of the players are
university students and may sometimes say or do things that are
age-appropriate for them, but may not be not age-appropriate for
younger players.

It is a weekly tournament (in fact, you get your choice of two
different simultaneous tournaments each Friday evening) and there is
no entry fee. There are some minor prizes for those who do well, and
random door prizes (all the prizes are paid for by Wizards of the
Coast). You can also just hang around playing Magic if you prefer, but
most people will enter one of the two tournaments. Both tournaments
begin at 6 PM sharp, but you can enter late if needed (taking losses
for any missed matches).

I hope that helps! Write back if you have any more questions.

If you come out to an FNM with a pile of 200 cards, there will be many many people there who should be able to help you pare that down, at least somewhat (I wouldn't mind helping myself, but I won't be around till next week)

Be aware, though, that FNM Constructed is usually Standard, meaning M12-forward right now, so you may not have as many cards as you think you do. I'd suggest Googling "Magic The Gathering Deck Construction" and reading about the various formats (Standard, Modern, Legacy) to find out more.

Thanks all for the info!

I wasn't able to make it out tonight, but I'm going to try to make it out for next week!
