Hi Everyone,

Here is a message from Deborah Whitman, one of the key members of the "Dog Park Task Force" and one of the driving forces behind the success of this mission:

Just wanted to let you know that on Wednesday evening, 10/22, the Public Works Sub-committee of the Town Council voted unanimously to incorporate a dog park in the new design for the Grove St entrance to Filippello Park!! It will take some time before it is actually built, but our town officials want very much "to do it right".

Thank you all for your effort and support over the past few years!

Just a follow-up - one of the Task Force members who attended provided notes/minutes for the Town Council meeting. For anyone that is interested in the procedure and how the meeting went, read below!

East End Dog Park Discussion Recap: Public Works Meeting Wed 10/22

Some of you were there, others couldn't make it
Here's the recap of Wednesday night's Public Works subcommittee discussion of the East End Dog Park

Three options for the East End dog park were presented by Steve Magoon:
  1. Public land next to the Arsenal loading docks near the tennis courts
  2. Private land between the back of the Arsenal parking lot & Greenough Boulevard
  3. Public land on Grove St as part of Filippello Park
Steve Magoon said that Peter Centola (Parks Director not in attendance) favored the "loading dock" site.

About 10 residents including a Dog Park Task Force organizer were in attendance & all spoke in support of the Grove St/Filippello Park location.

Several thanked the council for moving to create the How & Alta Dog Parks earlier this year but asked that the committee address dog park needs more completely with the third dog park.

Residents brought up the need for the space to be larger than existing dog parks & be a flat area.  They also asked that important elements including a water fountain & puppy/timeout pens be added to this park & that trash be collected more frequently (due to high usage, existing dog parks have often had overflowing trash which is unsanitary).

The full committee (Lenk, Palomba & Corbett) expressed support for Grove St/Filippello & will make that recommendation to the Council.  The committee also moved that the Council refer the issue of dog park management back to the Public Works Committee for further discussion of rules.

As the consensus was for Grove Street & no one spoke against it, the discussion turned to specifics of the actual dog park & the general sentiment was to make this Watertown's biggest, best & most complete dog park.

Councilor Palomba asked that a stack of emails in support of the Grove Street location that he had received be added to the minutes.  He also suggested that members of the Dog Park Task Force & other residents who have contributed to bringing dog parks to Watertown be included in the design process & discussions related to successfully managing the dog park.

Committee Members: Lenk, Palomba & Corbett were in attendance along with President Mark Sideris & Councilor Vinnie Piccirilli.  Steve Magoon & a health dept & animal control representative were also present.
