A list of the parks in town when even 'on leash' dogs are acceptable, I know Arsenal Park, Saltonstall and Filippilo have No Dogs signage, even though I have seen dogs in both parks many times. I looked around the town website and couldn't find any anything official. I frequently take my dog to the green space on North Beacon on a 30' leash to play.

Thanks, Rob, and Duncan.

Sadly, dogs (even leashed) are not allowed on any school or public park maintained by the town.  This is in the Town ordinances (91-16 (B)).  Which is why even if we can't get a park created, I'd like to at least see this changed - it would be nice to be able to walk my leashed dog through a park.

Here's the excerpt from the ordinances:

     (B)     No dog, except for a service dog, shall be allowed on school property or in a public park maintained by the town.

Thanks!  But this is bad news.

Indeed. In the proposal I finished last night (that went to the steering committee for review), I included stats about local towns and their regulations about on/off-leash areas. ALL surrounding towns -- even if they don't have a fenced-in park -- have MULTIPLE off-leash areas. I believe Belmont is the lowest (at 5) and Arlington has FIFTEEN. It bordered on gross and unjust, frankly.

(By the way everyone, sorry about the huge signature in all my emails -- it's a pain to turn off!)

Shannon:  Ordinances are made by people and can be changed by people.  March on (as I told Rob;-).  It is worth the effort. Laura

Can you walk your dog on the walkways along the Charles in town or is that also "illegal"?

The Charles River paths belong to DCR so that would be different restrictions. Dogs are allowed in Linear Park that runs between Whites Ave and Waverly.  There are signs that specify they must be on leash and probably something about waste pick up.

You can certainly walk your dog along the riverwalk as long as it is leashed and you pick up any waste.  There are a lot of bikers so you need to keep a short leash as the bikers approach fast and many do not warn you as they come up behind you.  Also your dog needs to be comfortable/not scared of them!

Currently, there are no official "parks" where dogs are permitted on or off-leash. We are the only town in the surrounding areas without any official area(s) for dogs. Arlington, Newton, Cambridge, Brookline, Boston, they all have at least several areas in town where off-leash is permitted. Most also have one, if not several, fenced in "dog parks." That's why we've been spreading the word about this opportunity.

You can walk your dog on the riverway and, of course along the sidewalks in Watertown, on a leash -- that's it.

Best,

Shannon
