            Watertown Bi-Ped Committee

                             Monthly Meeting July 2, 2008

Minutes of Watertown Bicycle-Pedestrian Committee

Present:  Fred Hewett, Peter Brooks, Mari Ryan, Steve Engler

Sheila Fay, Maria Saiz, Sue Tamber, Rachel Gould, Brad Parsons

* *Item: Safe Routes to School
Mari gave a status report on the SRS coordinator.  Notes attached separately.  Some concerns expressed that funding is available for only ½ year, but WalkBoston is hoping for further funding later on.  Project plan for next year should be ready for presentation at the next meeting.

* Item: Nonamtum Road
Meeting was help 6/18  at the Library, Fred attended for us.  Presentation showed change of the roadway – making it smaller with more parkway & wider path (10ft).  Lots of discussion regarding signalization at Maple & Charlesbank Roads.  Concerns expressed regarding speeding on the road and safety issues.  The committee signed a letter with MassBike and others requesting on-road accommodation of bicyclists.

* Item: Faire on the Square

Discussion regarding where to be located – in “green” zone or by the police.  Also, need to consider logistics, like rocks to hold things down, tape for signs, possibly bringing a table of our own, more chairs.

Mari & Maria will probably not be available to staff the table.

Action items for the event:

--Sheila:  contact Clif Bars for 2Mile Challenge handouts and samples, prepare commuter resources sheet,

            Look for bike survey handout or contact Deb for old one.

--Mari:  prepare SRS handouts;  contact Town Manager re: legality of bike raffle for SRS

--Fred:  contact Farina’s regarding donation

--Peter:  contact World in Watertown regarding bike collection flyers to give out

--Brad:  create survey questions for pedestrians

--Rachel, Brad & Steve:  sub-committee for posters

--Do we want to move our location to near the police again??  Did we resolve this question?

* Item: Bacon St. path

Gerry has drafted plan/survey and plans to talk to Cambridge regarding putting path there.

* Item: Traffic Commission

No appointment for BiPed committee.  Steve will see if he can possibly attend the day meetings so we get to know what is going on.  Also, ask for copies of minutes – Fred or Peter;  request from Town Manager?
