Minutes of Watertown Bicycle-Pedestrian Committee

 

Present:  Fred Hewett, Peter Brooks, Mari Ryan, Janet Jameson,

Sheila Fay, Maria Saiz, Sue Tamber, Rachel Gould, Brad Parsons

 * Item: Safe Routes to School

Jeanette update:  met with coordinators of other cities: Newton, Brockton & Stoneham.  Walk Boston & MassRides want consistency of handouts so our materials were revised.  Important because we want to get more funding for the future.

A show of hands by students was done at the Lowell & Hosmer schools to check who walks/rides.  Program requires we do for all the schools so will be done Sept. 16-18, then again in 6 weeks, Oct. 22-23.  Walking Wed. start on 9/24, there will be announcements & surveys before then. 

International Walking Day : Oct.1, there will be assemblies at Hosmer around the topic.

Safety Training for 2^nd graders only: Oct. 15&16.

Jeanette has started a regular feature in the Watertown Tab so folks can find out SRS info.

Jeanette & folks from MassRides and WalkBoston will be at the Faire with us.

 

* Item: Faire on the Square

• Booth space:  we have 2 adjacent spaces in Saltonstall Park.  Each table was $30.

To do:  Sheila: find out Clif Bars people’s space needs.

• Raffle:  we bought a Giant kid’s mountain bike from Farina’s.  (for kids ages 6-8)  Tickets being sold under Lowell PTO raffle license.  Tickets $1. each or a book for $5.00.  Tickets given to everyone, more available from Mari.
• Posters:  Rachel’s draft was critiqued and suggestions made.

To do: Rachel: find out price from Staples for printing & foam core backing.

To do: Sheila:  get 3 easels.

To do:  Fred?:  get bucket with sand for signs to stand up in.

• Questionnaire:  2 different pages.  Both were reviewed and revised.

To do:  Sheila: get pencils and pencil sharpener.

• SRS: Jeanette will decide what to bring with.
• Commuting materials:  Sheila will work up something to hand out.

To do:  Sheila:  get Lucite holder for paper display.

To do:  Sheila:  Rubel bike maps

* Item: Watertown Branch Trail

Janet talked to Steve Tolman’s office:  earmark in bond bill to cover whole construction costs.  Supposed to be passed in ’09, construction in ’10.

MassTrails will be holding a Linking Together event:  Peter will attend.

 

* Item: new secretary & members

Sheila retiring from role as secretary. Brad indicated he’s willing to take it on.  Sheila to hand over materials & info.

Rachel is resigning from the committee since she is moving to Chinatown.  We will miss her.  New member needed.
