Hello all,
I trust this message finds you well; I'm simply here
to inform you of this week's coming Waterloo Space Society meeting on
Wednesday, October 2nd starting at 5:30 PM.
This week's meeting
will be focusing on what we didn't get a chance to cover last week's
meeting, namely discussing events and activities that you members would
like to see happen this term (or in subsequent terms, your call).
We'll
also be doing sign-ups for our termly model rocketry competition; by
'sign-up' I just mean that you put your name down as a participant in
our competition. Alternatively, you may also sign up on our
website.
You can sign up individually and we'll match you with a team, or in
teams of 4 (negotiable). We'll be accepting competitors online and
in-person this week's meeting and next, so be sure to grab some friends
and sign up! Don't worry, no previous experience required, the only
requirement is that you think space is cool (which is everyone).
Also happening this meeting; it has been suggested that we
tweet
Chris Hadfield in the hopes of one day getting him to guest lecture for
us, so then, we will be taking a group photo of all of WSS (there's a
lot of us, so we might go outside and take it on the steps near RCH if
need be) then tweeting the commander with our photo. I have no doubt
that seeing so many Waterloo students excited about space will be very
heartening for him. We'll be taking the photo roughly halfway through
our meeting, so hopefully all those who have to come in late/leave early
can be included.
One final thing: we will also be holding our
first guest lecture of the term this week; Dr. Richard Epp will be
giving a talk on the science behind warp drives for WSS on Thursday,
October 2nd 5:30 - 6:30. We're still confirming our room booking, so
we'll e-mail you when we know for sure. As well, following the lecture
we will be heading out to the CIF firepits for a joint Waterloo Space
Society/Physics Club bonfire full of s'mores, hotdogs and, of course,
stargazing with our society telescopes.
Any members who have their
own telescopes (and a means of transport) are encouraged to bring them
out on Thursday. Don't know how to get to the firepits?
We've got you covered.Ah, so I lied.
True
final thing: for those of you keeping score at home you`ll notice that
Thursday's lecture + bonfire flies right in the face of our High
Altitude Ballooning meeting. As such,
just this once we'll be
moving our HAB meeting to Wednesday evening following our general
meeting. I understand that for those interested in HAB that that's a
long time without food, so
just this once, I will provide all
those attending the HAB meeting with sustenance. Those who can`t make it
on Wednesdays, fear not, I will keep you in the loop such that when we
have our meeting next Thursday that everyone will be on the same page.
What is HAB you ask?
You can learn more here.
Basically if you like space, science, math, engineering, environment,
arts, pretty much anything, then HAB is probably right for you. Also, I
don`t think many co-op employers have met a student who can say they`ve
built something that went up 30,000ft. Just saying.
Thanks,
Daniel Richard
Co-President WSS
P.S: If you`d like to become a part of the Waterloo Astronaut Training
Corps and haven`t yet let us know when you`re available, you can do so
with this Doodle.P.P.S: My apologies for the length of this message; if I`ve offended you e-mail me and I`ll give you a cookie at the meeting.
