Our academic calendar is in doldrums. When and how to start the academic session? How to conduct the classes or examinations by maintaining all safety precautions? - are questions haunting the people and academicians. We are witnessing the governments trumpeting Online Education or Online Examination to be the panacea! It is opined that Online education can never be called a comprehensive education model. It can at best become a monologue online lecture model and can only aid the formal education. But the way it is being pushed to replace the time-tested formal classroom teaching and learning, it will give a further fillip to all out privatization and commercialization of education. It is a foregone conclusion that Online education will not only seriously jeopardize the very process and culture of teaching, learning and cultivation of knowledge but also paves way for shirking off the responsibility funding of education by the governments completely. Further, in India when large scale socio-economic disparity has deprived millions from access to computers, internet, Smartphone and technology, imposing exclusive online teaching will be highly discriminatory and anti-poor. Some of the colleges / universities have conducted poorly attended online classes, based on this they want to hold online examinations. Some of these facts vindicate the disparity in access to technology: it is startling that more than 70% of students could not attend the classes due to network connectivity issues, economic problems; 90% of the students who heard the monologue lecture in the online classes could not understand anything. When the Corona pandemic is spreading very fast the lockdown has been relaxed in several states. So, the questions haunting our people are: Is it safe to send children to schools? Is it possible to maintain all medical directives and physical distancing in schools? Who will monitor it and how to enforce accountability? So, an overwhelming number of parents opine not to start the schools immediately; they consider the lives of children to be more precious than education. In this critical situation, we feel it is our obligation to initiate an independent democratic consultation among the academicians and education loving people. So as a responsible education forum, AISEC has taken up this task. We request you to please give your valuable opinion as to how to resolve the present imbroglio. We request you to kindly fill it and send it to us. | |
