Rowing should not place any extra strain on your knees as it is a non
load bearing exercise. However, if you do suffer from knees problems
you do need to be aware of the following when rowing:

1) Over compression at the Catch - adjust your feet position so
when you are at full compression your shins are vertical. If your
shins are less than vertical then that is OK, your knees must not go
past your ankles.

2) Locking the knees at the Release - do not force your knees
straight as you drive back on the slide, aim to push smoothly and
evenly off the footboard with your feet and control the straightening
of the legs.

3) Ensure as you drive back and in the Release position, your
feet do not leave the footboard. Your feet must consistently stay in
contact with the footboard at all times when rowing.

4) Aim to keep your knees in straight line when rowing, do not
allow them to open out to the sides especially on the recovery back up
the slide and as you drive back. It is better to have a shorter slide
than allow for the knees to drop outwards.
