If you are experiencing stiffness in your shins and ankles after
rowing, you may be rowing incorrectly. What often happens with many
rowers is at the Release, their toes rise up off the footboard and
they tend to use their toes (and hamstrings) to pull themselves back
up the slide on the Recovery.
It is not easy to stop the toes lifting up off the footboard and it
does require a lot of thought and practice to keep them in an almost
pointed position at the Release. A drill you can use to help with this
is Feet Out Rowing, as discussed in Weekly Training tip 22 on 29th
January 2007.
