Just knew I had to get to know you all - my name is Dianne Garland and i have been a midwife in the UK since 1983 - waterbirth practitioner since 1987 and in 2005 took the unusual step in the UK to go freelance - found that i could not fulfill my dreams of lecturing / writing and other midwifery roles within a full time NHS job. If you want to read about my changes it should be in the autumn edition of midwifery today - Barbara and i have been get friends and colleagues since 1990 and I have had the honour to work on many occasions with her both in the USA and last year in China - she is such an inspiration to me

Its really interesting hearing all your news - the USA is so vast that this network must be really useful - I am still working clinically as a midwife in one of my local NHS hospitals where we are due to open a birth unit for midwife only deliveries - low risk mums and babies in january 2007 - very exciting as midwives can reclaim their role and have total care / responsibility and challange medical interventions - we will not have any doctors on the floor and mothers can choose low risk options for analgesia - ofcourse including water - we plan to have three pools available - or massage / aromatherpay ect - all very exciting

I may meet some of you next year at barbaras conference in Portland oregon - I really hope so - keep up the great work -

Regards dianne

Greetings Dianne,

I am glad your here! In the US it is inspiring when a clinical midwife steps out of the box and does something like you are doing. It is rare. I have many midwife friends at all levels who are under doctors and not able to practice independently because of rules over them. It is a delema here in the states. I only know one who has tried to get a free standing birth center and I don't think it is going very well. Insurances and local medical staff is protesting this progression. We only have about 3500 midwives here in this nation who are practicing. A lot of midwives drop out very soon into practice because of regulations. Not to say that some of us keep going regardless, like myself, I feel all women should be able to have the birth they truly desire no matter what the regs. But thats another story! Waterbirth has been a great asset to all I serve in birth. I LOVE waterbirth!!!

Good to meet you here!

Zuki
