Internship opportunity with Save Our Springs!

Save Our Springs Alliance is a non-profit organization working to protect the Edwards aquifer, its springs and contributing streams and the natural and cultural history of the hill country region.  We are currently seeking outgoing and passionate individuals to help us by educating Austin residents and visitors about the natural environment in and around Austin and threats that are facing it, with a particular focus on Barton Springs. The goal of our summer outreach program is to educate citizens and visitors about the ecology of Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer, to increase our membership and to inspire and engage citizens by telling them what they can do to help further the cause.

Responsibilities

The job will consist mostly of tabling at Barton Springs Pool and other events. Interns will educate visitors on the basic ecology of the springs and the aquifer, as well as on any specific issue that the organization is working on at the time. This will include handing out informational material, selling educational t-shirts and other items, recruiting new members and getting people to sign up for our e-newsletter. At times you may be collecting petition signatures or encouraging some other sort of action on a specific issue.

Additional opportunities may include updating social media, attending public meetings, and leading educational nature tours. These opportunities will be based on need and the qualifications of the intern.

Job Specifications

The internship will start in Mid-May and run through August. There may be part time work available for interested individuals after the conclusion of the internship.

The job will require between 10-20 hours per week. Most shifts will be Friday through Sunday for 5 hours in the morning and afternoon (although some opportunities for weekday work may exist). Note that this will be outside in the heat, often during the hottest part of the day (though swim breaks will be allowed).

Qualifications

At least one year of college and an interest in environmental education and outreach, activism, environmental sciences, and/or conservation. Coursework in environmental science or environmental studies preferred. The ideal candidate will be outgoing and have excellent communication skills, with a desire to share their passion for environmental protection and engage citizens directly in the work.

Must be able to lift 25 lbs and work outside in the heat.

Access to a car and an iphone/android/ipad is extremely helpful.

Compensation

Pay will be $10/hour, plus mileage if applicable.

Deadline

Applications will be accepted through March 20, 2013.

To Apply

Please send all application materials to sa...@sosalliance.org.  Include in the subject line your full name and the words “summer internship”.

Please include a resume and cover letter and answers to the following questions. Please be brief (150 words or less per question).

Why are you interested in the position?

What is you major and why did you choose it?

What experience do you have that would make you a good fit for this position?

In your opinion, what is the most urgent environmental issue we are currently facing?

Thanks Ya'll,

Nathan Hartman
