Special Issue Calls from WASH Journals

Water and sanitation are essential for human survival and overall well-being. Access to clean water is crucial for drinking, cooking, and maintaining personal hygiene, while proper sanitation facilities help prevent the spread of diseases. Without adequate water and sanitation, communities are at risk of various health issues, hindering their development and quality of life.

Despite the importance of water and sanitation, there are still significant global challenges and disparities in access to clean water and sanitation facilities. According to the World Health Organization, around 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safely managed drinking water services, while 4.2 billion people do not have access to safely managed sanitation services. These disparities are particularly prevalent in low-income countries and marginalized communities, where inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and poor governance contribute to the lack of access. As a result, millions of people are at risk of waterborne diseases and preventable deaths. Lack of clean water and sanitation also has a direct impact on education and economic opportunities, as children often have to spend hours collecting water instead of attending school, and adults are unable to work due to illness. Additionally, the environmental consequences of inadequate water and sanitation systems, such as pollution and depletion of natural resources, further exacerbate the challenges faced by communities. Therefore, addressing these disparities and ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation should be a global priority to promote health, well-being, and sustainable development for all.
