Thefiles are completely uncorrupted and play smoothly on my P.C. But on the Roku Media Channel it has no audio. It's only with that folder of files in the meantime but I am afraid it will happen with more.

I have this same issue with ROKU. Many of my videos will not play the sound. Works fine on my other TV's, and on my PC's .... but apparently ROKU does not support a variety of codecs for sound. I know MANY ppl who have problems with this. I would really like a solution to this. I'll buy whatever is needed ..... but nobody seems to be able to help. ROKU does not seem to care.

You are free to offer feedback/suggestions to Roku to improve their container/codec support, though the likelihood of any significant change in a reasonable timeframe is low, so pick one of the listed solutions.

MKV is a container, nothing more. What is inside the container determines if the Roku can play it. For video, the codec must be H.264/AVC or MP4. Most newer players will also play MPEG2/H.262. The 4K players support H.265/HEVC. For audio, it has to be PCM, AAC (stereo only, not 5.1) or Dolby Digital. If you are connecting the Roku to a capable AVR, DTS audio is also supported. Any other audio codec and you don't have sound. Any other video codec and the file won't play.

The only way to play unsupported media is to have a media server transcode it. Use Plex, Emby, or any number of DLNA servers such as Serviio. You install these on a separate device, usually a computer, and it takes care of transcoding. If you don't want to set up a server, then you have to convert your media into supported codecs. Handbrake is a common free tool to use, but expect it to take an hour or so per file to convert.

So I was gifted a Roku Ultra 2019. In the recent last couple of weeks I've learned it's ways and functions, Limits and options. And the conclusion I have come to couldn't be clearer: What a waste of money.

The Roku Media app is horrendous--the movies don't even have thumbnails of any kind and they are sorted so weird and maze-like plus it doesn't SHOW THE FULL TITLE of the file and we all know that downloaded content has a long file name.

And of course how can we not forget that Roku is not supporting many audio codecs and if you are like me and bought this thing so you could insert your USB drive and play directly without having to rely on any internet connection , then it doesn't transcode the unsupported codecs and I am stuck with dozens of file that will take me hours to convert to the proper format.

And lastly, the controller doesn't have lighted button-layout that you could tell for **bleep**'s sake which button is which, and streaming movies with the light turned on is not optimal as we all know....NOT TO MENTION THAT THE JBL HEADPHONE I'VE RECIEVED MAKE THIS MADDENING HISSING SOUND WHEN YOU PLUG THEM ON--TO ANY DEVICE. So basically the JBLs are **bleep** as well--who would have thought.

Roku Media Player has its limitations, I won't deny that. As far as thumbnails and file names, you must be using it to play media from an attached drive. Where is the thumbnail coming from? Unless you have a JPG image file for each video, there's nowhere for that image to come from. For file names, what else can it display? It's not a media server, it simply plays what it sees. Connect the same drive to another media player and you'll see the same thing, unless you use something that has the functionality to retrieve metadata from online sources and store it in memory. No Roku device has that sort of memory available, so it can't provide that info.

I use RMP to play media from my DLNA server, and it has thumbnails, program information, and the name is determined by the title, so unless I'm looking at a folder view of my server it just shows the official movie/TV show title. And by using a DLNA server you don't have any issue with unsupported media codecs, as anything unplayable is transcoded. Another advantage of the DLNA server is that your media is available on any networked device, not just the Roku you plug the drive into.

Lighted buttons? There's so few buttons that backlighting isn't necessary. My Shield has a backlit remote, but I never pay attention to them because of the same reason, there's so few buttons that finding them by touch is not a problem.

It was gifted to me, and it has no receipt--that's why I am so frustrated. and the JBL are totally dysfunctional and damaged so that's not even a complaint on the product. opened the box, tried to use the JBL, and it had tons of background noise.

Hope someone can advise.

I have Eufy homebase 2 and 2 Eufy Cam 2 Pro.

System runs ok but videos download onto Android phone although claiming to be MP4 wont play video, only sound. When transferred to a laptop will also not play. Get a message about an issue with the codec.

If you look at the Video quality setting for the camera it says that 1080p will work with legacy hardware and software, but 2K recording may require a newer codec. What version of android are you using?

Thanks for your reply. Cameras are set at 2k and was just accessing using android phones standard video player. Have installed the suggested video player and they now play but at a reduced 1080 which I presume the player reverts to if it cannot show at 2k due to a codec issue. I didnt set the cameras to 1080 so either the player does it or the cams are not recording at 2k.

Phone is Android 10. Cameras set to 2k, have now installed suggested video player and now plays but at 1080 not 2k. I presume the player runs it in lower definition because it cannot handle 2k but unsure. System shouldnt be recording at 1080 as cameras set to 2k.

My newly deployed Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS has already installed Firefox 80, but most videos in the web are not playable. One codec complains "No video formats available", while the other, for example, youtube, says that my browser can't play HTML5 videos.

P.S. I lost 2 annoying days searching the web for solution, trying different approaches, rolling back changes, reinstalling browser and so on, and try to imagine my face when this single line appeared the solution.

Can you install just the codecs? Apple has ended support for Windows users but the codecs are all I should need. I may even dump my i-phone service over this. It appears to me that Apple turned their back on all the windows users and forgot that we still purchase Apple products. That's a gross over-site in my opinion.

Sorry to be a bit late, but in the QuickTime installer, under the custom installation menu there is an option to prevent the QuickTime player from being installed, and an option to install only 'QuickTime Essentials', which should just include the codecs required. I fear that other replies to this forum are either trolls or don't understand the problem domain - even the latest replies are talking about needing a different way to play your files when clearly you have stated over and over again that your editing software lacks the codecs to work with certain QuickTime formats. I have the same issue with video output from a piece of desktop recording software, which Premiere refuses to import. I would recommend that you don't install the player itself again considering the massive security flaws it already presents, but the codecs in QuickTime Essentials should be fine. Alternatively there is QuickTime Alternative 3.2.2 which offers a standalone installer separate from Apple itself.

Thank You very much for your post with the youtube link, this was very helpful and informative important information! I do relate to you and agree! Apparently greed has taken over and good customer service with support has left the building these days. Not just with Apple but all others as well because camera and video equipment still uses this darn MOV file structure. I am also now having problems with it in the new VLC player, I can convert it using a video converter such as Any Video Converter but it is a pain to figure out which format will work best. Also to your point I should not have to go thru this to play a video from a camera that is not even a year old.

At this point we can only hope that Apple with other vendors using it get hurt from it and then maybe they will learn from this great error in judgement that they have done because of there greed. They are trying to force us to give up on our PC/Windows based systems in hopes that we will run out spending tons of money to purchase a Mac. If they think it will work guess again because as of now I will not ever get one, I want them to pay me back for every song, video, movie that I paid for and take back there I-Pod and I-Tunes that I had once enjoyed. I will no longer support any manufacture that still uses Quick Time or any of its related formats until they can give me something that will work universally on computers or at best have ones to work with PC users.

I see the MAC users who posted here in earlier posts are silent on this topic now. Some MAC users can come across as real snobs. They look past Apple's shortcomings and won't say anything negative even if it's true. Most don't even have the decency to acknowledge a Windows user taught them something.

You can pick up a Windows computer with just as much RAM, the fastest processor available with all the bells and whistles for about 50% less than a Mac. Don't get me wrong, 10 years ago Mac had a superior and cleaner looking operation system. Today, not so much. The world has caught up.

If you're into monopoly's then Mac is for you. It's true that Apple devices integrate better with mac computers in some cases. Duh! They also use Microsoft Office and several other Microsoft systems because Mac never developed anything better.

F. . Windows users are more likely to be aged between 25-45 ( averagely ) and Mac users are more likely to be between 18-25 years of age. There is another interesting thing about these two operating systems is that Mac users are more likely to live in Cities then Windows users. In other words, inexperienced KIDS are more likely to buy Macs.
