India has more hungry people than any other country in the world
despite the country's emergence as a major economic power
By Rahul Bedi in New Delhi
12 July 2010

The Global Hunger Index for 2008 found that 200 million Indians go
hungry. Food shortages in one state, Madhya Pradesh, were so serious
that they compared with conditions in Ethiopia and Chad in Africa.

The survey ranked India 66th out 88 countries on the Global Hunger
Index, taking into account three vital indicators: child malnutrition,
rates of child mortality and the calorie deficient population.

"Despite years of robust economic growth, India scored worse than
nearly 25 sub-Saharan African countries and all of South Asia, except
Bangladesh," the report said.

Experts believe that India's abysmal record, despite self-sufficiency
in food grains, is due to corrupt and bureaucratic distribution
policies and poor childcare.

The recent rise in global food prices had worsened the situation by
harming many poor families. Moreover, India's lower castes and ethnic
minorities were discriminated against, pushing them further into
poverty and starvation.

Since 2002, India has enjoyed average annual economic growth of around
eight per cent, buoyed by a robust stock market, rising industrial
output and high property prices. But these gains have not benefited
the vast majority of India's 1.2 billion people. More than three
quarters live on only 30 pence a day.

Plan of action: Fight against the corruption and prejudice that is
keeping food from these people. Fight for jobs to become available to
the lower castes. Uphold Ghandi's principle that "there are no
untouchables" anymore. Talk about the problem to as many others as you
can, spreading the word. Visualize mothers feeding their children, and
having plenty of food to do it with. Pray that all may be treated
equally, with respect, and allowed their human rights. Surround these
poor people with your love. They are our brothers and sisters.

We need to focus world-wide attention on the plight of the Indians who
live in poverty. Every day they sift through garbage in order to find
scraps worth selling. So we will offer the Indians a prize, of at
least ten thousand dollars or more, for the most beautiful work of art
created out of garbage. In order to do this we will need to:-

Interest a large magazine, such as Time, to photograph the attempts of
artwork,
Find someone willing to fund the prize, in exchange for the publicity,
and decide the winner.
Monitor the disease, germs and viruses in the garbage used to create
the artworks,
Provide food and shelter for the artists who don't have any,
Hopefully, we will also be able to award a thousand dollars each for
the artists who participate.

The prize money should be paid direct from the benefactors to the
artists, without having to pass through anyone else's hands, and
should not be reduced by anyone's expenses.

I love that idea! Although any bit of rubbish worth using will probably
get sold for the daily food.

Who's that actor who's got his own personal refugee camp? And where is it?
I seem to recall Haiti. He's doing a better job than the aid agencies who
are used to doing these things. His camp has more water taps, more tents,
more happiness than any other. An he actually lives in the camp as he
believes that in order to help, he has to experience what the people are
experiencing. Sounds like he was really born for this sort of work. Maybe
we should get his advice.
