fix for issue 392, and addition of symlink handling.

Hi folks,

I implemented a fix for issue 392, where I needed to consumer events periodically rather than on occurrence.   A second patch added support to follow symbolic links, which seems to be an issue for many people 

(Issues:    likely: 401, 386   certainly: 365) ...  So it´s been two months since I issued the pull request, and there have been no reviews so far. Is there something I should be doing to solicit feedback?
