Jarice Hanson plays Frances Perkins in a Benefit for Pauline and Devereux Productions at First Congregational Church of Ashfield.
The first woman Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins, crafted some of the most significant legislation of the New Deal Era including Social Security, child labor laws, minimum wage, and the 40-hour work week.
Artistic Director Jeannine Haas of Pauline Productions asked Jarice Hanson, writer and performer, to share some highlights about creating and touring FRANCES PERKINS: A WOMAN'S WORK:
"One of the first advocates for this show was Frances Perkins' only living relative, her grandson, Tomlin Perkins Coggeshall. When I met him at the Homestead in 2019 and I told him what I planned to do, I discussed some of the very personal things that Frances herself would never have spoken about publicly. When I asked whether he would support my mentioning some of these things, he said "Go for it." Though Tomlin just passed January 7, he was an enormous advocate of this show and completely supportive. I'm so glad Tomlin lived long enough to be in the room when President Biden signed the proclamation making the Frances Perkins Homestead a National Park, just days before Tomlin passed from cancer."
