Two Hobbits, Sméagol and his cousin, Déagol, are fishing when Déagol finds the One Ring in the stream. Sméagol's brain is captured by the Ring, and he murders his cousin for it. He withdraws into the Misty Mountains as the Ring turns his body and psyche until he turns into the animal Gollum. 



Hundreds of years after the fact, during the War of the Ring, Gandalf drives Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and King Théoden to Isengard, where they rejoin with Merry and Pippin. Gandalf recovers Saruman's palantír, and the gathering returns to Edoras to praise their triumph at Helm's Deep. That evening, Pippin investigates the palantír and is seen by Sauron. From Pippin's depiction of his dreams, Gandalf deduces that Sauron will assault Gondor's capital Minas Tirith. He rides there to caution Gondor's steward Denethor, taking Pippin with him. 

Gollum drives Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to Minas Morgul, where they watch the Witch-king of Angmar, head of the nine Nazgûl, lead a multitude of Orcs towards Gondor. The hobbits start climbing a step cut in the bluff face that prompts a mysterious passage into Mordor, ignorant that Gollum plans to execute them and take the Ring. The Witch-king and his powers strike and overpower Osgiliath, constraining Denethor's child Faramir and his post to withdraw to Minas Tirith. 

Gollum discards the Hobbits' food, accusing Sam. Accepting that Sam wants the Ring, Frodo childishly advises him to return home before he and Gollum proceed to the passage prompting Mordor. Gollum fools him into wandering into the sanctuary of the monster bug Shelob. Frodo barely get away and goes up against Gollum, revealing to him that he should obliterate the Ring for the good of both they. Irritated, Gollum assaults Frodo yet tumbles down a gorge. Frodo progresses forward, however Shelob finds, incapacitates, and ties him. Sam returns and wounds Shelob, pushing her away, yet then covers up as Orcs show up and take Frodo with them. The Orcs get ready to execute Frodo, yet they wind up battling each other over responsibility for mithril vest; the interruption permits Sam to save Frodo, and they escape prior to proceeding to proceed with their excursion. 

As King Théoden gathers the Rohirrim armed force, Aragorn gains from Elrond that Arwen is biting the dust, having would not leave Middle-earth to be with Aragorn subsequent to seeing a dream of their future child. Elrond gives Aragorn Andúril, reforged from the shards of King Elendil's sword Narsil, with the goal that Aragorn can recover his inheritance and gain fortifications from the spooky Dead Men of Dunharrow. Joined by Legolas and Gimli, Aragorn goes to the Dead Men's refuge, promising to deliver them from Isildur's undead revile should they gone to Gondor's guide.
