Provisional Driver Prohibited Vehicles

Ifyou need to drive a prohibited vehicle you can apply for an exemption. Exemptions are only granted in exceptional circumstances. This is because prohibited vehicles are a high risk for drivers on their Ps.

Note: You must notify Transport for NSW within 14 days if any circumstances have changed which affect your exemption. This includes if you no longer need the exemption, or if the exemption letter needs replacing. A further fee may apply.

Provisional drivers are prohibited from driving high performance vehicles by Clause 36(2) of the Road Transport (Driver Licensing) Regulation 2017. The regulation defines 3 different types of high performance vehicle, and these are explained in more detail on this page.

Mass is measured in metric tonnes and is expressed to three decimal places, rounded to the nearest kilogram. The Mass used in this calculation is the Tare Mass that is specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Tare Mass is defined in the Australian Design Rules.

For example, it is not allowable to fit a bull bar or tow bar to a car and claim a Tare Mass greater than that supplied by the vehicle manufacturer. For commercial vehicles, the addition of a nominal mass for a body or tray may be considered, but this is at the discretion of Transport.

Similarly, it is not allowable to detune an engine and claim a Power less than that supplied by the manufacturer. Engines that have been detuned by the manufacturer prior to first registration may be considered, but this is at the discretion of Transport.

In addition to vehicles with a PMR greater than 130kW/tonne or whose engine has been modified to increase their performance, there are a number of other vehicles whose performance capabilities can present a higher than normal risk to P-plate drivers, and these are also deemed to be high performance vehicles. There are numerous reasons why a vehicle might be placed on this list, but typically, they are vehicles with greater acceleration and performance than their PMR would suggest.

If you are found using a mobile phone while driving, you may be given a fine and demerit points will be recorded on your traffic history. Double demerit points apply for second or subsequent mobile phone offences committed within 12 months of an earlier offence.

These restrictions also apply if you are returning from a disqualification to a P1 or P2 probationary licence, and you were under 25 at the time of the offence. These restrictions apply for the duration of the probationary period regardless of your age.

You can calculate the power-to-weight ratio of a car by dividing its maximum engine power in kilowatts by the kerb weight and multiplying the result by 1,000. For example, a vehicle with a maximum engine power of 195kW and a kerb weight of 1,667kg would have a power-to-weight ratio of 117kW/t.

Businesses that employ P1 and P2 licence holders under 25 years old may be eligible to apply for a business certificate of exemption to allow their employees to drive high-powered vehicles when they are at work.

A late night driving restriction is only imposed if, at the time of the offence, you were under 25, and held a provisional or probationary licence or you did not hold a valid licence and were not eligible for an open licence.

A late night driving restriction is also imposed if you are disqualified from holding or obtaining a Queensland driver licence, if you committed the offence when you were under 25 and held provisional, probationary or open licence or did not hold a valid licence.

If granted an exemption, you must carry your approved exemption certificate with you at all times and produce it if asked to by a police officer. You can be fined if you drive without your approved exemption certificate.

While your teenager may pass their road test, the parental driving role model continues. As your teenager gains valuable driving experience, ongoing adult supervision and guidance is a key factor in making them safer drivers.

All new drivers under age 21 are required to abide by Maine's provisional license requirements for two years from license issuance. Those issued their first license at age 21 or older are issued a provisional license for one year. What does that mean?

Talk to your new driver - Use this contract as an opportunity to talk to your new driver about the responsibilities that come with driving. Acknowledge this important first step in their passage to adulthood. Identify the corresponding duties that come with this new freedom.

Be sure your vehicle is safe to drive - Safe and responsible driving begins with a safe and reliable vehicle. For your safety and that of your new driver, make sure that the family vehicle is maintained regularly.

Set a good example - Drive the way you want your teen to drive. You will gain your teen's trust and increase your credibility by driving in a responsible manner. Your actions will speak louder than words.

Review insurance requirements - Discuss with your new driver the financial responsibilities of driving a vehicle and in particular the legal requirement of liability insurance for all drivers. Explain that drivers may have a legal and financial responsibility for their driving behavior.

When the driver is not operating a CMV, he/she can only drive the types of vehicles he/she was valid for before the restricted CDL was issued. That license type will be indicated on the restriction supplement. A person already holding a CDL is not eligible for a restricted CDL.

Periods shorter than 210 days can be chosen in increments of 70 or 105 days, as long as the total validity within the calendar year remains under 210 days. If needed, a period's validity may be extended by 35 days, as long as the extension request is submitted before the period ends and the overall validity within the calendar year remains within 210 days. (An application for extension that is made after an individual period expires will be treated as an application for a new individual period.)

A restricted CDL must be validated for CMV operation for each individual period of validity. This means the licensee must have their good driving record confirmed and a new card issued at each application for an individual period of validity.

Driver D initially applies for a restricted CDL that is valid for 105 days, beginning March 20 and continuing through July 3, but because of flooding decides to extend that period of validity by 35 days, to August 7. Driver D expended 140 days of her total 210 days for the calendar year, and would be eligible only for a second restricted CDL valid for a period of 70 days the remainder of the calendar year.

The learner's permit may be renewed two times and may be renewed by mail, by drop box, or in person with a reservation. Learner's permits may not be renewed online. If your permit has been renewed two times, you need to retake the learner's permit test. If your permit is expired two years or more, you need to retake the learner's permit test. Reservations are required.

A Rhode Island drivers permit can be issued to any Rhode Island resident who is 16 but less than 18 years of age, and has completed the 33 hour driver education course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island. For more information call CCRI (401) 825-1214.

Applicants who have completed a driver education class with an approved curriculum at a driving school other than CCRI must come to the DMV headquarters in Cranston with the class completion certificate to take a computerized knowledge exam.

A parent, legal guardian, licensed foster parent or adult spouse must be present to sign the permit application. A parent, legal guardian or foster parent must show identification. Legal guardian or licensed foster parent must show documentation to verify their authorization.

This permit is valid for one year or until the applicant turns 18, whichever is greater. A road test may not be given until the permit is held for six months; however, a road test appointment may be scheduled at the time a permit is received.

You must have held the Limited Instructional Permit for at least 6 months, passed a road test and not been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during that period. You must also present an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian stating that you have completed a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience with a supervising driver with 10 of those hours at night.

All applicants holding provisional licenses may obtain a full operator's license when they renew their Provisional License when it expires on their eighteenth birthday. Applicants may also obtain a full license prior to that date if they are at least 17 years old but less than 18 years old AND have held a Limited Provisional License for at least 12 months, and not been convicted of a motor vehicle violation during the preceding 6 months.

Any Rhode Island resident 18 years of age or older who has never been issued a Rhode Island driver's license or if the license has been expired for more than five years, must apply for a driving instruction permit by taking the computerized knowledge exam.

Drivers have been required to have a commercial driver's license (CDL) in order to drive certain commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) since April 1, 1992. The types of vehicles and operations requiring a CDL are outlined below. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has developed and issued standards for State testing and licensing of CDL holders. These standards require States to issue CDLs to certain CMV drivers only after the driver passes knowledge and skills tests administered by the State and related to the type of vehicle the driver expects to operate. Drivers are required to obtain and hold a CDL if they operate in interstate, intrastate, or foreign commerce and drive a vehicle that meets one or more of the classifications of a CMV described below. Restrictions are placed on a CDL when a driver takes the skills test in a vehicle which lacks critical equipment present in particular types of CMVs. Examples of these restrictions are listed below. Therefore, to avoid restrictions, drivers should take the skills test in the same type of vehicle for which they are seeking a CDL to operate.
