Hello, Waste Prevention Action Team members!

  • In 2021, WPAT members Marge Stevens and I served on a small sub-committee of the Benton County Solid Waste Advisory Council (SWAC), called the "Materials Management/Waste Prevention Working Group."
  • The working group's purpose was "to develop recommendations to SWAC to increase waste prevention activities in Benton County, in accordance with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality goals that call for a 'Materials Management' approach that goes beyond recovery."
  • We met for over a year, and helped develop the attached document: Recommendations for Advancing Waste Prevention in Benton County.

I AM RE-SENDING to keep the results in mind as WPAT moves forward with our own priorities and activities.  For example, at our WPAT meeting tonight, there was a suggestion for "Repair" as a possible future theme of a Recycling Block Captain handout... which goes perfectly in-line with Initiative #2 below, as recommended by the committee.

The report is long, but key sections are local program research pages 5-8, Recommendations on pages 12-15, and the following Recommended Initiatives on page 15:

E. Initiatives

1. County-wide collaboration for green businesses: Partnership of Saving Green and County program (i.e. Marion County’s Earthwise)
2. Durable Goods Reuse Center and Repair Mall
3. Expansion of Benton County/City of Corvallis “Library of Things” including event servingware
4. Construction & Demolition Waste Task Force

5. Reusable Take Out Food Container Service

It's exciting that the County has already co-funded the Coalition's Benton To Go program, which IS initiative #5 above!

Anyway, again just wanted to re-share this to keep it on our minds.

Thank you for reading!

Jeanette

Thank you, Jeanette. Great reminder – and a great suggestion for the upcoming Recycling Block Captains handout!
