Hi, WPAT members,

Peggy Lynch sent me an interesting article from the Guardian that I wanted to share with you:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/20/south-korea-zero-food-waste-composting-system?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=084a09b6-731c-4d76-925d-6cda51628e8c

A couple of points:

  1. Both Corvallis and Benton County offer food waste composting via yard carts (no plastic bags!), but only a small percentage of the population uses this opportunity. We either need to come up with better education and incentives, or implement disincentives, such as mandates that are enforced.
  2. Only at the very end of the article does the author address the need to prevent food waste in the first place – which is something that the Sustainability Coalition has been working on for years through our No Food Left Behind program.

The regional Sustainable Materials Management Plan (SMMP) will definitely need to address food waste in a major way!
