As a 90s kid, I grew up watching the best big-screen adaptations of Mahabharata. Over the years, many have mimicked but never equalled the achievements of acting legends Dr Rajkumar, NT Rama Rao and Sivaji Ganesan in the mythological genre.

The filmmakers in the 70s were unburdened by the technological advancements of the film industry. They just focused on whipping up extraordinary scripts drawing on the richest mythological text that the world has ever produced. The filmmakers at the time doubled down on the drama and relied on its actors to deliver timeless classics.

The first half of Kurukshetra suffers from uneven pacing. However, the second half holds well, thanks to a series of action set pieces. The warriors bring down the skies, hollow out the surface, rain down hellfire and shake the universe amid the raging Kurukshetra war. Some sequences are a throwback to old movies where a snake arrow was countered with an eagle arrow. A fire-spitting arrow was tackled by the arrow that sprinkles water.

Kurukshetra could have benefited from better writing. It seems Naganna paid more attention to the visuals than the piece of literature. The film feels like a teacher reading out a poem to students without explaining and analysing its deeper meaning. That said, the film is worth a watch just alone for the sense of nostalgia it invokes in us.

Hindu epic Mahabharatha is such a huge subject that it is impossible to tell a story convincingly in a three-hour film. Thanks to the unique characters and interesting back-stories, it becomes difficult for any filmmaker to cover the entire epic in just one instalment. Knowing their limitations, the makers of Kurukshetra have touched upon key incidents that lead to the bloody battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas.

There have been many movies and TV serials made on the Mahabharatha, projecting how the good defeated the evil, but writer-producer Munirathna's Kurukshetra stands different from the lot because, on a rare note, Lord Krishna or the Pandavas are not projected as the protectors of the dharma. With all his wickedness, Duryodhana aka Suyodhana is showcased like a hero in the mega-budget Kannada film.

The story does not talk about Duryodhana's childhood or explain the reason why he developed such hatred towards his cousins. The story begins after 100 sons of Dhritarashtra and five sons of Pandu return home after completing their education. The rivalry between the Pandavas and Kauravas and how the animosity builds among the cousins as the time passes by form the crux of the story.

Munirathna's Kurukshetra is a colourful film and a treat for the fans to see so many big names in one film. The 3D experience, on this scale, is new to the Kannada audience although VFX is poor at parts. The role, undoubtedly, is tailor-made for Darshan, who impresses the audience with his acting as well as by mouthing lengthy dialogues with ease.

His height, well-maintained physique and overall body language are apt for the role. The way he wields his mace and twirls his moustache remind the audience of Dr Rajkumar's iconic role of Hiranyakashipu in Bhakta Prahlada. Last but not the least, the dialogues deserve a special mention.

On the flip side, the problem lies in the piecing together of scenes. The sequences appear one after the other without touching the emotional chord of the audience. The first half is dedicated to Darshan, surprisingly he is missing in action in major part of the second half. Even in the Kurukshetra battle, his presence is hardly felt.

Except for Darshan and Arjun Sarja, all other characters look least important in the narrative. Some characters like Yudhisthira and Abhimanyu amuse audience at times. However, Arjun Sarja, after Darshan, genuinely wins appreciation from the audience. His portion in the climax remains one of the whistle-worthy moments of the flick.

Despite its drawbacks, Kurukshetra will be remembered as a well-made film backed by solid performance from Darshan. This should not be missed if you have not read much about the Mahabharatha. And mythological film has not been made in Sandalwood for a long time which makes it a must-watch film for the the family audience.

After the success of Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna in 2012, Naganna has teamed up with Darshan Kurukshetra, a movie based on Hindu mythology the Mahabharatha. The latest film has ensemble cast that includes Arjun Sarja as Karna, late Ambareesh as Bheeshma, V Ravichandran as Lord Krishna, Sneha as Draupadi, etc.

Munirathna-produced movie has the music of V Harikrishna, Jayanan Vincent's cinematography and Jo Ni Harsha's editing. The film is simultaneously being released in Kannada and Telugu on 9 August, while it will be out in Tamil and Malayalam next week. The Hindi version is scheduled for release in September first week.

The movie was kick-started with the idea of making the mythological film in 2D format and the plans to make it in 3D was an afterthought. As per the makers, it has been shot twice, 2D as well as 3D formats. As a result, the Darshan-starrer, which was supposed to be out in 2018, has been delayed by an year.

The story of Kurukshetra is based on Ranna's epic poem Gadhayuddha. It will be narrated from the perspective of the Duryodhana played by Darshan. The sibling rivalry and the incidents leading to the bloody war in Kurukshetra is the primary focus in the film.

Kurukshetra has garnered a lot of buzz as it is billed as one of the biggest movies ever made in Sandalwood. Further, Darshan has taken a break from his usual mass-masala films and opted for a challenging mythological role.

Analysis:
Darshan has come out with flying colors in the role of Duryodhana aka Suyodhana. His body language and high make it a tailor-made role for him. The first half belongs to the Challenging Star, while the second half majorly deals around the Kurukshetra battle.
