Second round of Maytag frontloader repair - I believe that I used a flammable lubricant when replacing the first set of bearings, which may have warped or melted the seal in the original kit.  Upon first test after installation, machine smoked and the smell of rubber permeated the drum.

In your video you mention using a non-flammable spray lubricant to help aid in the seating of the bearings - what would you recommend?

Also, I read that you mention that a high quality, firm setting 100% silicone sealer should be used to set the new seal in place - is there a recommended sealer as well?

Any recommends would be great - thanks!

Jason-
Any 100% silicone will work to set the seal in place. Just make sure it really is 100% silicone "sealer" and not lubricant.  There are lubricant and sealers on the market and for some reason many of the sealers are not actually 100% silicone for whatever reason.  I do not know how they are getting away with this but many of the caulk tubes for tub and tile are just junk.  Some are ok but all the automotive sealers that I have tried have been good quality.

For the lubricant around the bearings, it is not really critical what type you use.  There is not chance of flame or even extreme heat generally.  The smoke that you smelled was likely from the seal not being fully seated.  Sometimes this happens and the seal will rub on the spider assembly grinding a bit of the seal covering away.  It usually is not a problem unless the seal has just too much interference with the spider.

When you take it apart, be very aware of the condition of the seal when you remove the tub.  Hopefully the seal will remain in place so that you can see it before it is removed.  Check to see if it can be inserted any more deeply.  Check the bearing just below it to see if it was not quite fully seated, etc.  That is where you will find the best opportunity to improve the longevity of the repair in your case.

Jerrod - you ROCK.  Your video also saved me hundreds of dollars and possibly the expense of a catastrophic machine failure (according to a telephone repair man)  Psh.  $80 and a few swear words and I got the first set replaced in a matter of hours....Thanks for all your info!

Good job Jason. I believe there are many things that we can do in this life that others tell us or lead us to believe we cannot so great work!
