Cross reference for obscure Kenmore (Canada) model number

Hello from eastern Ontario.

This week, our 14 year old Kenmore machine started making noises and exhibiting excessive vibrations on high spin speeds. It only exhibits the symptoms when loaded with clothes, not when test-run empty.

I found this site yesterday and have ordered the replacement seal and bearing kit.

While I wait for the parts to arrive, I'm wondering if someone out there can advise on what a good cross reference model number would be, in case (upon complete dis-assembly) I need a new spider.  Sears Canada will not sell me a separate spider (if required).

Look for this line of model numbers:  8140 KIT - Kenmore, Frigidaire, Gibson, GE Washing Machine Models:

Yours is going to be similar to all of these.  I have the same machine that you have and 99% of them have all the same parts in side.  A few that look like ours on the outside have a different size shaft and seal requiring the 8147 repair kit but I would guess all the rest of the components are the same or very similar.

Grab one of those model numbers and search for parts at appliancepartspros.com or repairclinic.com to see what you come up with.  Nearly all the parts have photos so it is easy to verify that way.

The really bad news is that spiders for this model have never been sold separate so you have to buy the entire drum assembly or find a scrap unit that you can cannibalize.

Good job making a go of the repair.  I am sure you will do fine and the spider very well may be just fine.

I just tried your link and the result was the same as yesterday as shown in the screen shot below:

I ended up phoning in my order yesterday to ensure the correct kit would ship, only because the result of entering my model number didn't include a list of all applicable models....hope that makes sense.

So I still have no cross reference model number to have a look on the parts sites you mention.  If you are able provide me with a number for a Frigidaire, Gibson or GE, I would be able to start searching online as you suggest.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the spider is serviceable.

Thanks for helping me keep my machine out of a landfill site.

Yes, it is tough to cross the Canadian model numbers.  You should have been sent an 8140 repair kit.  I will look into that.  Here is the list of model numbers that will be similar, if not the same as yours.  Pick on and being searching:

There is a remote chance that it is an 8147 repair kit instead of the 8140.  It is a very rare accorance.  If that is the case then we will send the correct one as soon as you know.  Please confirm with us as the data point will be helpful in ensuring others can find the correct kit in the future.

Will it be visually obvious if an 8140 kit will not work on a machine that requires an 8147 kit?

Or, are the shapes and sizes of the parts in each kit similar to the point of having to measure critical distances with a micrometer (i.e. parts simply will not fit in the holes)?

The bearings are the same in either kit.  The seal is slightly different which will be obvious.

Hello.  Canada Post says my bearings and gasket should arrive tomorrow.  I have torn down the washer and I am about to pull the old seal and old bearings.  I took some photos of the current seal as you mentioned there is a 0.01% chance that the seal that will arrive tomorrow may not fit.  Please have a look at the attached photos. It looks correct to me based on what we sent.  The inside diameter of the seal should be slightly less than 1.6 inches.  If that is the case then you should be good to go.
