Drum support bearings and seal have failed and will need to be replaced with kit 8190. I have watched multiple videos on assemble of drum/spider assy into the bearing housing. On some, a wave washer is placed between the seal and bearing. On others, there is no wave washer installed. Because of the bearing failure, the spider shaft was damaged and needs to be replaced. I have received new spider DC97-15491A with an o-ring installed where the wave washer would normally be installed. Question: Has the wave washer been replaced by an o-ring when using a new spider ? or do I install both 0-ring and wave washer or do I remove the o-ring and replace it with the wave washer ?

Steve,
Interesting.  So, the shaft has an o-ring slid over it?  If so, are there any instructions that came with the spider in regards to the o-ring?  My guess is that it has nothing to do with the wave washer you mention.  I could see the o-ring putting pressure on the seal lips to keep them sealed to the shaft when assembled.  The wave washer that you talk about it not a required piece to the assembly.  It assists in retaining the seal in the location where it will best seal but there is always a shoulder below the seal that prevents it from seating too far also.  The wave washer will also help the bearing to remain in the position that it should remain in also.  The chances of either the bearing or the seal moving are remote however.  I like to silicone the seals in place and the bearings are pressed into position to they are snug enough to remain where they are installed at unless they get wet from the seal failing.

I hope this answers your question.  You can order a replacement kit for your machine here:   http://www.yellowvanhandyman.com/washerrepair.aspx

Thanks for quick response. Here are some pictures attached to clarify what the parts look like. Is there a technician that has recently replaced bearings, seal and spider with the o-ring installed that can tell me what parts were used ? My other problem is that the original wave washer was damaged when the bearing failed. I cannot find a replacement part number to order a new one. Perhaps the reason is based on your comment that it is not a required part. Please help me to get to the bottom of this.

Steve,
Interesting. I see now.  The reason they have put the o-ring on there is to act as a thrust restraint.  You see, with this design there is nothing to prevent the rotating assembly from shifting front to back other than the built in tolerances.  What they did was built it too loose so they are essentially using that 0-ring as a spacer between the bearing and the shaft to prevent the shaft from bumping up against the bearing.  The issue may not be the fact that it comes into contact with the bearing at that point but the movement in the shaft could cause an issue inside the drive motor on the back or it could have an effect on where and how the seal is riding on the shoulder such as preventing it from coming into contact with the spinning spider.  Anyway, the 0-ring is much more important than the metal wave space you are concerned about.  If you really want to put it in then I would pound out the one that was in there to as close to original as possible put it back in.  If it is trashed then I would not stress too much and I would just assemble it without the wave spacer.

The wave washer was destroyed, nothing but a few small pieces.

I agree with your comments….my feeling was the o-ring was used as a “flexible” part to compensate for stack-up variation through the bearing assembly. Will assemble with o-ring in place on the shaft as received and no wave washer. Thanks again
