I am having trouble with my Sears Kenmore washier. In the spin cycle it make a very loud noise - even on the most gentle spin cycle.

It seems the bearings need to be replaced on the washer drum. That is what I am trying to do.

However, I have my dryer (also a Kenmore) stacked on top of it.

The two units are then shoved into a corner where they can only fit in when they are stacked.

That is the problem.

The two of use, myself and my wife tried too pull it out from that narrow space, just to get at it. . No luck!
It was mighty heavy and even with a smooth concrete floor it is very difficult - impossible - to move. The two of us could not budge the units.

I saw a video on Youtube where some very husky guy separated the two units and by unscrewing their stacking kit; so that he could single-handedly
pick up the dryer and place in another area of his laundry room - out of the way. He also strongly advised against do this, at least with only one person.

The units stacked together weigh a lot and it is very difficult to move them.

I am wondering if I could do like he did in the video and separate them and then move just the dryer. It must be lighter than the washer. Any thoughts on this?

Lou-
For sure.  The dryer is on top because it weighs much less than the washing machine.  A strong person with long arms can pick up a dryer!  Two average people can easily pick up the dryer and move it off the top of the washer.  The trick is that you need to be enough space behind them to be able to unscrew the stack kit.

You can unscrew the cover off the front (bottom) of the washer which will expose the inside of the machine.  This could give you a bit of a hand hold to be able to pull it forward.  You could also use a dolly or a pry bar to lift under the front and gently drag the unit forward.  You can also pull one corner forward and then the other corner forward rocking it forward.

It is really difficult to remove the tank and make the repair on the washer without removing the top of the machine so it is best to remove the dryer stacked on top anyway.

Good luck with the repair.  The tight space is tough but it is possible to make the repair in a confined area.

Well that was strenuous.

I mean just moving the Kenmore washer and dryer around in the small laundry room. At first I had to unstack them. I did. Then move the
front loader Kenmore washer to an area in our den where it can be worked on. No problem, but it was heavy.

Now I have two questions:

1. Why remove the rubber rim on the front door. It seems to be out of the way so unless it is dirty why do it? All the videos show
it being removed even when putting bearings in. Just why do it?

2. Getting each bearing out of the barrel or tub: is it easy or hard. What additional items can help say silicon grease?

Anyway, now that I am on the actual bearing replacement job those are the two questions that I have.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Lou-
I am sure you are doing a great job.  Congratulations for taking this on.  You will very proud of yourself once you get it all put back together!  Here are some responses to your questions:

1. Why remove the rubber rim on the front door. It seems to be out of the way so unless it is dirty why do it? All the videos show
it being removed even when putting bearings in. Just why do it?
THE RUBBER BOOT IN THE FRONT CONNECTS TO THE FRONT OF THE UNIT THAT NEEDS TO COME OFF SO THAT YOU CAN GET THE DRUM OUT THE FRONT. IT IS SIMPLE TO REMOVE AND SIMPLE TO PUT BACK.  SOMETIMES THEY PUT DABS OF GLUE UNDER IT SO JUST PEAL THOSE OFF GENTLY AFTER YOU REMOVE THE WIRE AND SPRING ASSEMBLY.

2. Getting each bearing out of the barrel or tub: is it easy or hard. What additional items can help say silicon grease?
IT REALLY DEPENDS UPON THE UNIT.  SOME OF THEM POP RIGHT OUT AND SOME AREA  ROYAL PAIN.  SOMETIMES THE SHAFT IS HARD TO GET OUT OF THE CENTER OF THE BEARINGS. IF YOU RUN INTO THAT, I JUST DROP THE END OF THE SHAFT ON THE CONCRETE STARTING WITH ABOUT 6" OFF THE GROUND AND WORK YOUR WAY UP FROM THERE UNTIL IT COMES OUT.
