I read that when you replace the rear bearings and seals that you will need to replace the rear outer tub gasket as well. Is that correct? I want to make sure I have all the parts I need before starting this project. Thanks for your help.

Sarah,
You do not 'have' to renew the seal between the two sections of the outer drum. Most of the time I have re-used them, but I am not an appliance repair technician, I do it as a favor to others or for myself. However there are occasions when separating the two sections of the outer drum the seal becomes damaged, or is otherwise unsuitable for re-use, to badly compressed is the usual one. The problem is you never know if you will need it or not until you take the drums apart. The same goes for the spider you will not know how good or bad it is until you dismantle the machine.
I hope this is of some help.

so much for your help. One last question. The machines dismantled and I'm ready to take it apart but cannot get the rear nut off to save my life. I'm finding contradicting information as to which direction to turn it...clockwise or counterclockwise. My model number is WBHV5200J1WW. Any advise is extremely appreciated.

Sarah,
I cannot 'pull up' anything with that model number, but my resources are limited. Perhaps Jerrod can help?
As I said I am not an appliance technician and have never worked on a GE machine so I cannot be of more help. As a suggestion you might try posing your question at www.managemylife.com  most of the 'experts' there are knowledgeable and helpful.
One final thing should you go ahead with the bearing and seal renewal please read the "How To Mount Bearings" section at the following website. It is vitally important that you put no pressure on the inner races and cages (the bits that hold the actual ball bearings) and also that you introduce no debris into the bearing housing.
Good Luck

No you don't always have to replace them, and as far as the nut, will it not turn or turn and not come off? I have had both problems on other things. If it is stuck I would have to use extra leverage with either a breaker bar or a malet to hit on the socket or wrench. If the problem is spins and wont come off, then it can be stripped and I have had to cut off or drill tap it.
