hello, I've just submitted my entry and wanted to share it with
everyone and welcome some feedback.
Its a free augmented reality iPhone & Android mobile application
entitled Warwickshire Reality View.
The application is a simple geolocated map and listing function which
uniquely allows users to view a live augmented reality version of the
data via the users iPhone & Android mobile phones.
Think of how Arnie in the 'Terminator' viewed the real world but with
digital information overlaid giving him name, address, directions,
distance all in relation to his current position.
Another way of describing the app is to think of a mobile SatNav
system that uses a real-time camera view instead of tired old graphics
and googlemaps to display Points of Interest (POI's) depicted as
graphical icons.
The Warwickshire Reality View uses the free 'Layar' browser which is
supplied on millions of phones worldwide including iPhone3GS, HTC
Android, Samsung, GoogleNexus and many others. It displays places &
services of interest and icons which instantly update depending on
users position & compass viewpoint i.e. as they walk or rotate
around, the digital information will update accordingly.
Developers can sign up for a free account and can create augmented
reality 'experiences' as they like to call it.
see
http://www.Layar.com
I've created the Warwickshire Reality View using the static datasets
for Libraries, Parks, Information Kiosks but developers can actually
link into MySQL dB's for larger datasets.
To access all you need is an Android powered mobile (HTC Hero, Samsung
Galaxy, Google Nexus etc) or an iPhone preferably 3GS.
Download the free browser (Layar) [itunes appstore link]
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/layar-reality-browser/id334404207. Then
switch to local
The app will allow people to automatically find information for
* Libraries & Information Centers
* Information Kiosks
* Customer Access Points
* Parks
* One Stop Shops
* and Waste Recycling Centers
in each case the user can:
* view place/service icon in live camera view
* view place/service icon in map based view
* view place/service icon in a list view
* instantly place a call to service provider or place
* instantly send an email to service provider or place
* instantly visit the service providers website
* instantly view an image relating to the service or place
* get walking or driving directions
* know how far away they are from their target service/place
The augmented reality browser Layar (much like Internet Explorer for
PC's) allows users access to free or paid 'layars' which display local
information via a live camera view.
These layars can be thought of as Arnie Terminator digital lenses'
The best way to try this out is experience it yourself. Just visit
itunes app store and search for Layar.
1st Download and install this free augmented reality browser
2nd Search for 'Warhack' (or find under Local tab) this will then
automatically locate your position in Warwickshire using your phones
GPS signal and then will populate any information within a radius of
30,000m of your position.
In my opinion the future where people can instantly locate local
council information services and places of interest all by holding up
their mobile camera is here!
This can easily be expanded to include any data or link to local
council dB of services and would be perfect for the Tourist
Information sites.
If you already have the Layar browser installed all you can go
straight via the links below

[android link]
http://m.layar.com/open/warhack
although I've not had time to create a video, for those without an
iphone/android mobile, you can see the Layar site for some demos.
I think once you've seen its capabilities you'll soon be upgrading
your phones ;)
look forward to comments.
