Production of the film began in April 2016[10] and plans to filming were announced in the first part of August 2016, when the film had the working title "Production No. 52".[11] Sharma required several months of diction training to prepare herself for her role, as her character is from Gujarat. She describes her character as "very superficial, doesn't have any depth as a person. There is no similarity with me. But her morals and values of self-respect are something that I can relate to. But otherwise, the character is quite impulsive by nature."[12]
The film underwent a lot of name changes throughout its production phase from The Ring to Rahnuma to Raula until it was finalized with Jab Harry Met Sejal.[13] When the title of the film was finally revealed, it received considerable backlash from people who accused that it must be a copy of the iconic 1989 Hollywood romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally... or that it must have been inspired by it. However, contrary to popular beliefs, the two films have no similarity or connection with one another except both falls under the same genre and the two protagonist start off as strangers. Khan explained, "When Harry Met Sally... is one of the greatest love stories ever made in the history of world cinema. Our film on the other hand, is quite original, a fun space love story by Imtiaz Ali. But it is a takeoff from there as that film is a classic. It is a way to attribute."[14][15]
In an interview with The Indian Express, Khan discussed about the possible epilogue of the film; the couple had three children and moved to a small town for some time. Sejal then works as a lawyer while Harry takes time off and writes a book. The former takes the role of a working partner while the latter looks after the children.[16]
The film's music was composed by Pritam, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The first song of the film, "Radha" is performed by Shahid Mallya and Sunidhi Chauhan was released on 21 June 2017. The second song, "Beech Beech Mein" sung by Arijit Singh, Shalmali Kholgade and Shefali Alvares was released on 3 July 2017. The third song, "Safar" sung by Arijit Singh was released on 10 July 2017. The fourth song "Butterfly," sung by Dev Negi, Chauhan, Aman Trikha and Nooran Sisters was released on 13 July 2017. The fifth song, "Hawayein" sung by Singh was unveiled on 26 July 2017. The sixth and last song titled "Phurrr" was composed by the American DJ Diplo and Pritam. It was sung by DJ Diplo, Pritam, Mohit Chauhan and Tushar Joshi and was released on 3 August 2017. The soundtrack was released by Sony Music India on 3 August 2017.[21][22][23]
Debarati S Sen of The Times of India commented that they have made an "enjoyable album", "which captures the usual genres that characterises a typical Bollywood film, well enough".[28] Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama rated 4 out of 5 stars to the album.[29]
Anita Iyer of Khaleej Times rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and said, "The film goes through its ebb and flow, and all you can do is enjoy the good bits, till they last."[34] Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News also rated it 2.5 stars out of 5, saying "The climax isn't ground-breaking, however, the cinematography that highlights the beauty of a handful European countries is pleasing to watch."[35]
The Times of India gave the film 3 stars of out 5 and wrote, "Sound advice here would be that you actually buy yourself a tour ticket to Europe and soak in the sights for real. But, if you want to settle for a cheaper option of touring the continent inside a cinema hall, buy yourself a JHMS ticket and get transported to the land of make-believe captured indulgently by cinematographer K. U. Mohanan, with the added advantage of a Punjabi 'munda' playing your friend, philosopher, lover and guide." Filmfare Magazine gave the film 3 stars out of 5 stating that, "JHMS is a happy romantic comedy that you can sing and dance along with. Pritam's music is a stand out feature. The performances are really strong".[38]
This movie is an example of how a strong cast, a good director, good songs, beautiful locations and visuals CANNOT save a film, if the characters are NON CONVINCING, screen play is ABRUPT and story is MISSING! I came out of the theatre heart broken! As a fan, I am super disappointed in Imtiaz Ali and Shahrukh Khan!
She is naïve, silly and so ignorant that she asks Harry if Amsterdam is in France. She insists that Harry find her sexually attractive but also says that she is not the type of woman who runs away with her tour guide. I wanted to ask what type of woman runs away with a tour guide? In a film as ostensibly cool as this, are we still peddling archaic stereotypes?
But the biggest offender here is writer-director Imtiaz Ali. Imtiaz excels in combining stars and the requisite mainstream glamour with narratives that feel raw and messy. He gives us fantasies that are at once, aspirational and insightful. In his best films, we feel like we are watching a prettified version of reality.
Imtiaz and Shah Rukh coming together should have created a romantic classic. Instead Imtiaz has made his weakest film to date. Jab Harry Met Sejal doesn't touch your insides. It's not truthful enough to move you.
I realized on my drive home, that his film is just Highway but as a rom-com. HIGHWAY SPOILERS FOLLOW Spoiled girl who has never seen the world stuck traveling with a damaged difficult man. Spoiled girl becomes obsessed with him and feels a strange closeness, eventually reveals and admits the tragedies of her life hidden under her perfect exterior. Man finds himself somehow healed and drawn to her at the same time. They finally admit-without-admitting how they feel and form an unofficial married partnership. And then in Highway, he is killed by her family and she lives a solitary life dedicated to his memory. Not so much in this one. SPOILERS OVER
It reminded me of the Highway dynamic more than anything else, which again had a massive visible age difference in casting, and that ended up making the film deeper because the audience had to sort of get past that to see how the characters really fit together.
What I liked about the film is it showed that neither of them really significantly changed. Anushka stayed demanding and stubborn and slow to listen to others and quick to take control of the situation. Shahrukh stayed kind of grumpy and slow to open up. But as we saw in the wedding sequence, they were able to balance each other, she forced him to go out and be himself and open up more, he forced her to loosen up and be happy.
It's my favourite characteristic of his filmmaking and nowhere to be found in Imtiaz's latest confection, Jab Harry Met Sejal wherein the journey neither delivers the zest of an adventure nor the wisdom of an exploration.
As is the template of all of Imtiaz Ali's films, travel is an important part of the journey, here too. It is a catalyst and a character; it moves the protagonists and the movie forward. The journeys his characters undertake are both onward and inward.
Adhering to his love for travel, Imtiaz Ali's new film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma as the titular Harry and Sejal, is shot in Europe for most part and features stunning locales that will make you reach out for your passport and head out.
The film perks up with the entry of Sejal, one of the members of the vacationing group who Harry was chaperoning around Europe. Sejal convinces a very reluctant Harry to accompany her on a search for her lost engagement ring. The ring is a family heirloom and it is imperative for her to find it. And thus begins their mad dash across some of the most stunning locations across Europe.
On Tuesday afternoon, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali did a Facebook Live to interact with fans and movie-lovers to discuss and dissect his latest release, the Shah Rukh Khan-Anushka Sharma-starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal.
One of the bigger problems of the film (besides the lack of characters worth rooting for) was the dated worldview that Imtiaz gave Anushka's character. Anushka's Sejal was shown as a woman who's constantly seeking validation from Harry, a serial womanizer.
After the film's debacle, theories that Shah Rukh Khan overpowered the narrative (and whether Imtiaz tailored the writing to suit SRK's larger-than-life persona) also did the rounds. Imtiaz explained, "Shah Rukh is a very easy person to work with since he's a theatre actor. I don't have to change anything because of his persona but I do change a lot of things as I go along. There were things that changed but not because Shah Rukh imposed it on me."
About the harsh criticism that the film generally received, Imtiaz said, "I have never received an overwhelmingly positive review of any. I am old enough to not take criticism negatively even if the criticism is negative. I believe a lot is achieved by constructive criticism than say, dishonest praise. I do stand by Jab Harry Met Sejal. This is the movie I wanted to make. Don't worry too much about critics. Sometimes they say valuable things which we must acknowledge. I am sure it'll help me make better films as I always find a way of benefitting from criticism. "
When pointed out that the usual 'Imtiaz-ness' was missing from JHMS and that Harry's character was half-baked, Imtiaz said, "It was a very on-the-go kind of a film. Didn't want to plague it with flashbacks of Harry's past. Had this been a series, I'd have been able to give it more depth but since it was a feature film, we obviously had limitations."
"It's time Shah Rukh Khan and his contemporaries stop pretending to be dashing young heartthrobs on screen. Shah Rukh, Salman, they are in their 50's now. Why do they cast themselves opposite 20-something actresses, and pretend they are the same age. George Clooney wouldn't be half as sexy if he colored his hair and pretended to be half his age. It just makes a film like this difficult to take seriously," said Daisy, 35.
