to Loreene Atkinson

Dear Loreene,

The sting of filling up your car or truck suddenly hurts a lot right now. But imagine for a moment an Australia that runs completely out of fuel….

A litre of fuel is more than $3 a litre in some parts of the country but is regularly around $2.20 a litre in regional Australia.

For families, tradies, farmers and small businesses, petrol and diesel are not optional extras.

The Treasurer Jim Chalmers should have the ACCC investigating and prosecuting immediately.

Unfortunately, the Albanese Government has been caught flat-footed again, but this is a long-standing problem and a wake-up call for everyone.

We must also introduce a system that prioritises regional supply chains for the transport industry and fuel supplies for agricultures, fisheries and miners.

IRANIAN WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM

It was right that we as a nation accepted the group of women from the Iranian female soccer team.

They feared returning to their homeland and are seeking a better life.

It is however also right that the Australian authorities carefully vet their applications for asylum.

The government wanted to make its offer of support to the athletes behind the scenes so as not to put them or their families in danger, and that is appropriate.

NATIONALS LEADERSHIP CHANGE

Congratulations to Senator Matthew Canavan the new leader of the National Party, following the resignation of David Littleproud.

I also put my hand up to be leader but was unsuccessful. I’m very proud to have done so. I’m the first female to contest the Nationals leadership.

We now have two Victorians in the Nationals leadership group - me as Senate Leader and Darren Chester as our Deputy Leader.

As leader, David Littleproud led the Nationals as we opposed Labor’s divisive Voice Referendum. He also fought for nuclear to be part of Australia’s energy mix, with the courage of being willing to host a facility in his own electorate of Maranoa.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support.

Kind regards,

Senator Hon. Bridget McKenzie

Leader of the Nationals in the Senate

Senator for Victoria
