Donald W -- Already more than 32,000 people have signed the FREE CBC petition! But events are unfolding quickly as we fight the Harper Conservatives’ plan to silence and control our CBC through its latest Omnibus Budget legislation, Bill C-60. The most important development is that the government has moved to limit debate of Bill C-60 in the House of Commons. This means we must move with even more dispatch and determination. Jian Ghomeshi, Carol Off, Peter Mansbridge and every other journalist and creative person at the CBC will be beholden to Stephen Harper if he succeeds in the biggest and most sinister media takeover Canada has ever seen. Please help us to stop Harper by signing the Free CBC petition right now. Harper has no mandate to turn Canada’s national public broadcaster into a state broadcaster, yet this is exactly what he wants to do.  Instead of delivering on his party's election promise to maintain or increase CBC funding, he is seeking to control and silence our CBC. The Omnibus Budget Bill would make Harper theultimate boss of every CBC employee by giving the government complete control over the wages and working conditions of all CBC staff.  CBC must operate at arms length from government. Even the perception that CBC journalists are pulling punches or program decisions are made in favour of political masters would be disastrous for the CBC and Canadian democracy. Let’s not allow this to happen. Canadians value and need a strong and independent national public broadcaster. FRIENDS is working in collaboration with LeadNow.ca to ramp up this campaign quickly.
