I signed.  Makes sense to me.  I think MacCleans needs to put the emphasis on the 2nd syllable.  d.

Canadian universities invest billions in tobacco, fossil fuel & weapons companies. Let's force them to think twice about where they invest their money.

D. W. -

Weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Martin, tobacco companies like Altria Group that produces Philip Morris cigarettes, fossil fuel companies like Exxon Mobile or Imperial Oil -- if you were trying to make the world a better place would you invest billions in these types of companies? Every year Canadian universities do.

My friends and I went to university to learn how to make the world a better place, so we were shocked to realize how much our schools were contributing to global problems with their investments.

It doesn't have to be this way. We have a simple idea that will make Canadian universities think twice about how they invest their money.  Every year, Maclean's Magazine publishes a popular universities ranking report used by high school students to decide which universities they will attend. We know, because we used it. Universities really care about how they rank.

So, we started a petition asking Maclean's Magazine to include a "University Ethical Investment" ranking in their next Universities Report. Click here to sign our petition.

It's a simple step Maclean's could take that could have a huge impact. Universities brag about their rank. Some even call Maclean's to find out how they can improve.

We know universities are open to ethical investment. For example, the University of Toronto divested ten million from tobacco companies after student pressure. Some have set up committees to look at how they could invest more ethically. Others need a push that Maclean's could provide.

Students attend university to learn how to solve the country's biggest problems, and we don't think those universities should be contributing to those same problems. Click here to sign our petition so that we can get Canadian universities thinking about how to invest their billions more ethically.

Thank you!
