I've been trying to decide how to organize the Equipment chapter, and its tables. I could break things into functin categories, like the Pathfinder Core Rulebook does. In that case, I'd likely make a PL (Progress Level -- which notes what tech level the gear is from) note part of the cost tables.

I've also thought about dividing gear BY PL, to make it easy for a GM who wants a piece of equipment from a specific tech level to easily find them. But some geat (like firearms, GoTos, much of the armor) can exist at different PL levels...

I think by function, but organize them within the function groups by pl.  The same way that you have melee weapons and then ranged weapons and within those simple, martial and exotic.

I agree. I was just going through the d20 Future material, and it's kind of annoying that if you want to look up a particular piece of equipment, you already have to know what PL it is.

Yeah, that's a fair point. I think by functions and then by PL is probably good for most things. I may have to sub-categorize weapons and armor a bit, since they already have so many sub-categories.

OTOH, having gear by PL within each category does mean that if I have settlements add PL to their stat block, it's easy to have price adjustments -- so a PL 5 Town is more like to have PL 5 (and I would guess PL 4 -- rules still being written) equipment than PL 6 equipment, and any rare pieces of PL 6 that do exist will cost more than they would in a town with an average PL of 6 or 7.

I also think that having tables set up with similar functions is the way to go, with the subtables for different PL would make everyone's life easier.

Gonna agree with the rest by type then PL.
