Heya Folks,

So as of today I am no longer a member of Super Genius Games. The company and I had ceased to be a good fit, so we can to a mutually satisfactory agreement that has me no longer being a member of the Super Genius Entertainment LLC, and no longer the lead developer of Super Genius Games. I sincerely wish SGG good fortune in all its future endeavors, and I am very rpoud of the work I did while part of it.

A lot of that work is going to come with me in my new venture, Rogue Genius games, which I am in the process of spinning up. I have also brought Warlords of the Apocalypse with me, and thus those of you with preorders are now my customers rather than SGG's. I took this project because I am passionate about it, and I really want to produce a game you'll enjoy and I'll love working on and finishing.

I am sure more questions will come as we move forward, and I'll be giving you updates regularly to keep you in the loop about where I and the project am.

Thanks for everyone's support as we take another bend in this already-long road. :D

I am in this to the end. But this game may well be the Flying Dutchman of RPGs.

One of the reasons I took WotA with me was to keep a steady hand on the Dutchman's tiller...

Sorry to see you go, but glad you're staying with the project.

Owen,

Best of luck with the new company and getting the game going. Do you have a web site yet?

The website is in development. Once again I ended up announcing things earlier than I would prefer, though in this case it was because my Green Ronin announcement was about it hit anyway, and people were going to ask what was up if it didn't mention SGG at all. :)

It'll be at www.roguegeniusgames.com, but there's nothing there yet. The site is under construction at Birddog Software.

Well, good luck with the new venture Owen. May Rogue Genius be as successful as I'm sure we all want it to be. :)

Hi Owen,

Any news?

I just checked the web site and didn't find anything. Is there a Facebook page or somewhere else that people can go to to get updates?

Thanks,

Craig J. Brain

Hey folks!

So, update time. Progress on WotA has had to take a back seat while I worked on getting Rogue Genius Games established. It turns out creating a whole company is a lot of work, and while I have formed an LLC, written operating agreements, gotten an EIN, acquired trade dress, set up contracts, begun arranging accounts, and handled a slew of other legal things, I don;t have everything in place yet. Getting my website live is one of the undone tasks, for example.

OTOH, with luck, this week will see the release of RGG's first new Pathfinder-compatible product which is a great benchmark, though still just one step in a fairly long process of having a company that can do things without a lot of day-to-day effort by me. I am dedicated to getting to that point, but it's certainly not going to happen any time this month.

It was, perhaps, unwise of me to take Warlords with me when I left Super Genius. It's a significant project that I'll need to tackle without any of the resources SGG had put away for it. But I believe strongly in this project, and am emotionally invested in seeing to it the book is done (and done right), and that everyone who pre-order gets (eventually) the book they were promised.

So while I don't have much to report just now, this is absolutely still on my list of things I am going to do. But again, I don't want to rush it, or produce a cruddy job. So I'm going to need time to get into the groove of running a company on top of everything else I am doing, and then finally turn an eye to scheduling this thing.

I hope I can create something worth the wait. :)

Hey Owen,
Just wondering if you could give us a little update. Not looking for absolute details, but if you have any general ideas as to the state of the project.

Thanks,

Hey folks.

Wow doing regular updates *should* be easy. I suspect I may just lean to heavily on the fact I don't have a solid deadline on this yet, and that really *isn't* fair to you pre-order folks.

So, where we stand. The ink is finally dry on Rogue Genius Games as a legal entity, and we even have the frame work of a website up (roguegeniusgames.com). Setting up a game company from almost-scratch took more time and effort than I'd have liked, but not I can *just* worry about my RPG work as manager member, lead developer, and writer for RGG, Pathfinder Developer for Green Ronin, and general freelance work for Paizo and some 3pp companies who want me for Kickstarters.

That puts me exactly where I had hoped to be in mid January, so I am running just about a month behind on getting things done. That said, March is still looking good for getting back to regular WotA design and updates, and by the END of March I should know what it is going to take to get this book done and put out at the quality level I want.

One of the things I am wrestling with is that I DO want to crowdsource some funding so this book can be as high-quality as I'd like, but I think I don't want to run a Kickstarter for Warlords of the Apocalypse until it's 80% or more written and ready to go. That means I have to write it while I do my other 60 hours a week of rpg writing and development, but there have just been too many Kickstarters that bogged down at the writing phase, and caused other problems (like print and/or shipping costs going up, so money no longer covers what's needed). The obvious way to avoid that is to have the writing done in advance, which would also allow early fulfillment of things like rough drafts and maybe even sneak-peek pdfs while art and layout are done. But, that method will slow down how things go.

One a more design-update front, extensive playtesting with the Anachronistic Adventurers classes has shown that, as a system, they all need a slight upgrade. I have known that handling things like a lack of raw magic spells and magic items might create a need for new subsystems to keep characters on the same power scale as Pathfinder classes, but I have now concluded that the classes themselves need a bit more edge going for them. I have been working on tweaking them for a Post Apocalypse game in any case, but I *also* need to increase their power curve somewhat.

I also have some other 3pp interested in helping out in various design tasks, but I'd need to work out fair compensation for them to take advantage of such offers.

So that's where we are as of now. I'll make an effort to do a better job keeping you all in the loop.

One thing to consider is the chapter lead-ins. I've been tee the shadowrun books lately, and the in-game writing interspersed within thd game rules really appeals to me.

Especially if you are still planning on having multiple end-times scenarios in the WoTA book.

Just keep swimming, Owen. I for one am still willing to be patient and see it done right.

I've been using a lot more short-fiction intros in the Rogue Genius Games pdf line, and I do think it's a great way to help set tone and hint at the overall campaign setting in WotA.
