Gob Iron is an American musical group officially formed in 2006. It consists of Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt's Jay Farrar and Varnaline's Anders Parker. Their debut album, Death Songs for the Living was released on October 31, 2006 by Transmit Sound/Legacy Recordings. Their name comes from a British slang term for a harmonica.
The songs that would become Death Songs for the Living were recorded spontaneously during a five-day period in autumn of 2004 in Farrar's studio in St. Louis. Farrar had originally intended to record a new Son Volt album, but that project was postponed in favor of these songs.
The songs played, with one exception of a Farrar original, were reworked versions of traditional folk songs by artists such as Rev. J. M. Gates, Stephen Foster and the Stanley Brothers. Lyrics and melodies have been altered, some almost entirely rewritten through what is sometimes referred to as the "folk process". While Farrar and Parker chose the songs on the fly, it was later found that death was a common theme running through; hence the title, Death Songs for the Living. The songs are punctuated by nine short instrumentals, one between every pair of songs.
Allmusic praised Death Songs for the Living as Farrar's best effort since Son Volt's 1995 Trace. The album is described as "strong, deeply felt, and speaks of a genuine commitment to keeping the folk tradition alive through a willingness to challenge its structures".[1]
It takes serious talent to write and sing songs that sound angry while the music lifts your spirits. So much of political punk is abrasive and unpleasant. No hooks. No melodies. But other times the words sound incongruent with emotionless and insipid music. The Iron Roses manage something rare and commanding with music that lifts the heart coupled powerfully with lyrics that express fury and resentment of the current world. Punk as a genre has been so commodified and diluted over the last decades that it seems to be ever increasingly hard to find bands that resonate this way. That sing and play with such intensity that their authenticity cannot be questioned. That prove that true punk is alive and well and can have you dancing around your kitchen singing along at the top of your voice.
As Beam began to assemble the musicians he wanted for his record, one common thread arose- they all lived in Los Angeles! Outside of his own pedigree, the decision to work with engineer and mixer Dave Way at his studio Waystation high up in Laurel Canyon was a logical step based on recommendations from two of the joining players on the record. An additional session would also take place at Silent Zoo Studio, where a 24-piece orchestra would lay claim to a handful of songs, helping prepare them for lift-off.
In an old song book I have sheet music and words to Blacksmith Boogie. I'll try to work on it if I can find it and maybe put a recording on here. I'm a better fiddler/musician than blacksmith. Last year at the Mt Hood Meadows Western States Conference we put together a blacksmith band. Folks decided to call us the "Clinkers". Had great fun!!!
Ella Mae Morse, one of my fave singers, renders The Blacksmith Blues about a Kentucky horseshoer. I was in my teens when she came out with it in 1952. Her many other songs I liked, but especially Cow Cow Boogie and Mister Five by Five. She thrived in the big band era (my era)!
This includes the 146th Annual Rosebud Sioux Tribe Fair & Wacipi held week, where the Iron Woman special was featured with the winner taking the championship after 51 songs. The winner of this Maza Win Iron Woman Special after 51 consecutive songs is Wanbli Waunsila Wi Eagle from Standing Rock. Her parents are Jon Eagle Sr. and Martina Miller-Eagle.
During the pow wow, the Black Bull tiospaye sponsored a Maza Win Special where 23 jingle dress dancers entered the arena and the winner danced 51 straight songs from two drum groups. The two drum groups, the Rockin K-Les Makes Room For Them and Iron Wood Singers and the of the special contest were Butch Felix and Pat Bad Hand worked through the special for over two hours. The winner received $1,000, a star quilt and other gifts. Spectators honored their favorite jingle dancers by throwing blankets and star quilts, ribbon skirts, new cooking pots and hundreds of dollars on the ground.
The Black Bull family first sponsored an Iron Woman contest in 2014 to honor Ista Gi Win, Asia Black Bull when she was exiting Miss Teen Rosebud. That 2014 Iron Woman Special was old style, no fans, no leggings, no feathers or backward dancing. Oskate Win One Star took that championship with 27 songs.
She explained how Duane Hollow Horn Bear told her what the meaning of maza was, something that gave such a deep meaning to Iron Woman. Maza coming from maka zani. Maka meaning unci maka, our land, our home and zani is that energy force within maka that gives everything life. Like that Iron Woman in your life, who is the strength that holds everything together, who gives that energy force and creates a home wherever she goes.
Black Bull said the family is planning another Iron Woman special in two-year with a winner take all of $5,000. The special is usually held at the end of a pow wow, after most categories are finished.
As difficult as the game can be, the environments are where Song of Iron truly shines. Artistically, this video game is stellar. From ascending a snowy mountain, to traversing forests and killing goblins in caves, the seamless and ever-changing environments give you the sense that your character has been on a long journey. I was most impressed by the mirrored-effects in the water, and the use of lighting, silhouettes, and shadows.
The scenery is quite realistic and I found myself taking photos often. The screen has minimal HUD so as not to detract from the beauty of the game such as an epic encounter with a dragon which was my favorite scene.
There were minimal issues within Song of Iron. I noticed a few spelling and grammatical errors throughout the game, but I forgive the sole-developer for being an artist and not a writer. Though, if he needs someone to help edit, I volunteer as tribute. Additionally, some of the controls were unresponsive, leaving my character standing in place taking damage from enemies. I also had to restart once due to an error I made in getting a box stuck in the wrong direction. Lastly, I felt aiming the bow to shoot arrows was a bit tedious and slow as well.
Did you ever stop to wonder why the fellows on the job
Refer to Robert Menzies by the nickname Pig-Iron Bob?
It's a fascinating tale though it happened long ago
It's a part of our tradition every worker ought to know
Chorus
We wouldn't load pig-iron for the fascists of Japan
Despite intimidation we refused to lift the ban
With democracy at stake the struggle must be won
We had to beat the menace of the fascist Rising Sun
It was 1937 and aggressive Japanese
Attacked the Chinese people tried to bring them to their knees
Poorly armed and ill equipped the peasants bravely fought
While Australian water siders rallied round to lend support
Attorney General Menzies said the ship would have to sail
"If the men refuse to load it we will throw them into jail"
But our unity was strong - we were solid to a man
And we wouldn't load pig-iron for the fascists of Japan
For the Judas politicians we would pay a heavy price
The jungles of New Guinea saw a costly sacrifice
There's a lesson to be learned that we've got to understand
Peace can only be secured when the people lend a hand
In his biography of wharfies leader, Ted Roach - "From Pig Iron Hero to Long Bay Gaol" Denis Kevans describes how Ted Roach consciously used the Eureka Oath at marches and rallies, before and during the famous "Dalfram" Pig Iron dispute, in November, 1938, in Port Kembla, NSW.
"I got hold of the Eureka Oath from a Lloyd Ross pamphlet. The wharfies, en masse, took the oath, and through the Trades and Labour Council, and at as many mass meetings as possible, we had the oath recited and sworn."
Ted said that taking the Eureka Oath "went over big, a big lift, it was very lifting".
During the 11 weeks Dalfram dispute, Attorney General in the United Australia Party government, Mr. Robert Gordon Menzies, gazetted "The Transport Workers Act". He did this to break the spirit of the wharfies, who were locked out over their refusal to load pig iron onto the "Dalfram", part of a 300,000 ton BHP pig iron contract with "aggressor nation", Japan.
The TWA also known as the "Dog Licence Act", or the "Dog Collar Act" allowed for the dismissal of the wharfie work force, and their replacement by untrained, non-union workers, each of whom needed only to purchase a licence for one shilling to work on the wharves.
Ted Roach, a step ahead of the authorities, arranged for "Bunny" Griffiths to go and buy the only TWA licence bought in Port Kembla. Ted Roach then publicly burnt the licence, outside the Customs House. Ted Roach told Denis Kevans that he burnt the licence as a conscious re-enactment of the miners' burning their licences at Eureka.
Remarks: Please note that HBO hasn't released a soundtrack album of "IronJawed Angels" up to now.
