Windows Terminal allows users to provide a pixel shader, applied to the terminal by adding the experimental.pixelShaderPath property to a profile in your settings.json file. Pixel shaders are written in a language called HLSL, a C-like language with some restrictions.
The continuation of my previous question, I am able to find a way to capture a live screen without own window with help of WinRT's Windows.Graphics.Capture. I can concentrate directly on a particular window handle to get live capture. now, the problem with this approach is I am not able to apply pixel shader. The question Applying HLSL Pixel Shaders to Win32 Screen Capture having the same requirement but the answer to that question is not solving my problem.
I am attempting to use the CRT-Royale CRT shaders which are generally considered the best CRT shaders; these are available in .cg format. I transpile them with cgc to hlsl, then compile the hlsl files to compiled shader byte code with fxc. I am able to successfully load the compiled shaders and create the pixel shader. I then set the pixel shader in the d3d context. I then attempt to copy the capture surface frame to a pixel shader resource and set the created shaders resource. All of this builds and runs, but I do not see any difference in the output image and am not sure how to proceed. Below is the relevant code. I am not a c++ developer and am making this as a personal project which I plan on open sourcing once I have a primitive working version. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
What you should do is to remove the CopyResource call, and instead draw a full screen quad on the back buffer (Which requires you to create a vertex buffer that you can bind, then set the back buffer as render target, and finally call Draw/DrawIndexed to actually render something, which then will invoke the shader).
Do you have any links to tutorials or something? I am totally new to shaders and I want to read myself into.
I did copy and paste your code, but I guess I have to apply it somewhere. (Or at least call it?)
GPUs execute shaders by breaking up the shader work into waves (these are also called warps or wave fronts). In the above diagram, each blue block is capable of executing one wave. Each green block could execute up to four waves.
After selecting an event in the Events view, the State and Pipeline views (found in the Pipeline tab) will show details of the Direct3D state at the time of that event. Here you can view what resources are bound to the pipeline, shader code, inputs, outputs, and the currently bound rendertarget(s).
HLSL shader code can be edited directly inside PIX, allowing you to immediately see the effect of your changes on rendering results or performance. This can be useful for prototyping and optimizing shaders, as it can greatly reduce the turnaround time when trying out different ideas.
Other views (such as OM RTV 0) will update to show the effect of your change. You may find it useful to dock more than one instance of the Pipeline view next to each other in order to view rendertarget results at the same time as editing shader code.
The Wireframe visualizer highlights whatever geometry was rendered by the currently selected draw call in wireframe. Visible pixels are shaded green, while culled pixels (eg. backfacing triangles or failed depth test) are red:
The Overdraw visualizer colors the scene according to how many pixels were shaded and written to the framebuffer after passing the depth test. This is useful for understanding how well things like front-to-back sorting or a z prepass are working to reduce overdraw:
Finally, the Pixel Cost visualizer colors the scene according to the approximate rendering cost of each pixel. The brightest areas of the resulting image indicate which parts were the most expensive to render. Pixel cost is estimated by dividing the Execution Duration of each draw call by the number of resulting pixel shader invocations, and accumulating that average each time a pixel is written. This includes the cost of other pipeline stages, but it is divided evenly across all pixel shader invocations in the draw without accounting for varying vertex density, etc.

Traditional shaders calculate rendering effects on graphics hardware with a high degree of flexibility. Most shaders are coded for (and run on) a graphics processing unit (GPU),[1] though this is not a strict requirement. Shaders are used widely in cinema post-processing, computer-generated imagery, and video games to produce a range of effects. Beyond simple lighting models, more complex uses of shaders include: altering the hue, saturation, brightness (HSL/HSV) or contrast of an image; producing blur, light bloom, volumetric lighting, normal mapping (for depth effects), bokeh, cel shading, posterization, bump mapping, distortion, chroma keying (for so-called "bluescreen/greenscreen" effects), edge and motion detection, as well as psychedelic effects such as those seen in the demoscene.[clarification needed]
As graphics processing units evolved, major graphics software libraries such as OpenGL and Direct3D began to support shaders. The first shader-capable GPUs only supported pixel shading, but vertex shaders were quickly introduced once developers realized the power of shaders. The first video card with a programmable pixel shader was the Nvidia GeForce 3 (NV20), released in 2001.[3] Geometry shaders were introduced with Direct3D 10 and OpenGL 3.2. Eventually, graphics hardware evolved toward a unified shader model.
Shaders are simple programs that describe the traits of either a vertex or a pixel. Vertex shaders describe the attributes (position, texture coordinates, colors, etc.) of a vertex, while pixel shaders describe the traits (color, z-depth and alpha value) of a pixel. A vertex shader is called for each vertex in a primitive (possibly after tessellation); thus one vertex in, one (updated) vertex out. Each vertex is then rendered as a series of pixels onto a surface (block of memory) that will eventually be sent to the screen.
The graphic pipeline uses these steps in order to transform three-dimensional (or two-dimensional) data into useful two-dimensional data for displaying. In general, this is a large pixel matrix or "frame buffer".
There are three types of shaders in common use (pixel, vertex, and geometry shaders), with several more recently added. While older graphics cards utilize separate processing units for each shader type, newer cards feature unified shaders which are capable of executing any type of shader. This allows graphics cards to make more efficient use of processing power.
2D shaders act on digital images, also called textures in the field of computer graphics. They modify attributes of pixels. 2D shaders may take part in rendering 3D geometry. Currently the only type of 2D shader is a pixel shader.
Vertex shaders are the most established and common kind of 3D shader and are run once for each vertex given to the graphics processor. The purpose is to transform each vertex's 3D position in virtual space to the 2D coordinate at which it appears on the screen (as well as a depth value for the Z-buffer).[6] Vertex shaders can manipulate properties such as position, color and texture coordinates, but cannot create new vertices. The output of the vertex shader goes to the next stage in the pipeline, which is either a geometry shader if present, or the rasterizer. Vertex shaders can enable powerful control over the details of position, movement, lighting, and color in any scene involving 3D models.
Geometry shaders were introduced in Direct3D 10 and OpenGL 3.2; formerly available in OpenGL 2.0+ with the use of extensions.[7] This type of shader can generate new graphics primitives, such as points, lines, and triangles, from those primitives that were sent to the beginning of the graphics pipeline.[8]
Geometry shader programs are executed after vertex shaders. They take as input a whole primitive, possibly with adjacency information. For example, when operating on triangles, the three vertices are the geometry shader's input. The shader can then emit zero or more primitives, which are rasterized and their fragments ultimately passed to a pixel shader.
Typical uses of a geometry shader include point sprite generation, geometry tessellation, shadow volume extrusion, and single pass rendering to a cube map. A typical real-world example of the benefits of geometry shaders would be automatic mesh complexity modification. A series of line strips representing control points for a curve are passed to the geometry shader and depending on the complexity required the shader can automatically generate extra lines each of which provides a better approximation of a curve.
As of OpenGL 4.0 and Direct3D 11, a new shader class called a tessellation shader has been added. It adds two new shader stages to the traditional model: tessellation control shaders (also known as hull shaders) and tessellation evaluation shaders (also known as Domain Shaders), which together allow for simpler meshes to be subdivided into finer meshes at run-time according to a mathematical function. The function can be related to a variety of variables, most notably the distance from the viewing camera to allow active level-of-detail scaling. This allows objects close to the camera to have fine detail, while further away ones can have more coarse meshes, yet seem comparable in quality. It also can drastically reduce required mesh bandwidth by allowing meshes to be refined once inside the shader units instead of downsampling very complex ones from memory. Some algorithms can upsample any arbitrary mesh, while others allow for "hinting" in meshes to dictate the most characteristic vertices and edges.
