Today, we remember Ward 5 residents Asia Sivon Cottom and Bernard Brown, 11 year-old Bertie Backus Middle School students who perished in the Flight 77 crash at the Pentagon on  9-11-2001.  Accompanied by their teacher, Miss Sarah M. Clark, they were flying from Dulles to Santa Barbara, California to go to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.  The students were two of three exceptional students who were chosen to go on a four-day National Geographic field trip.

The students and their teachers are gone, but surely not forgotten.  Their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who revere and honor their memory.  Please also see below tributes to Asia Cottom and information about the Asia Sivon Cottom Memorial Scholarship Fund.
