Dear All:

I am a long time user, former Bsprc counselor (release 3 weeks ago and
newly called YM president (last week).

Boy do I miss access to the data in Ward Tools.

Can I create a data file with all the YM's info that I have access
to...
date of birth, priesthood held, address, phone, email address, qrm
calling, and date called.

That could be loaded to my iPhone and accessed with the MT app?

If yes, can someone help me create the correct file format?

I understand that this will not sync with MLS... but the database will
be much smaller than a whole ward.

Thanks for all you do!

Dale

There is not the ability at the moment. There is not an easy way to filter, other than remove all confidential data.

Andy

I don't want to filter.

MLS exports a 3 or 4 csv files. Which are "cooked" by the desktop app and then uploaded to the iPhone.

I would like to create a csv template(s) that I can enter data into... then cook and upload.

Am I missing something?

The MT, is that Member Tools? If so, we are not involved with the product. Sorry, I misunderstood the question. We answer questions about Ward Tools here.

Thanks.

Come on Andy. MT was a typo. My question is regarding Ward Tools.

I was a WT user for do long that I actually paid for it. And I did not whine when it went freeware. I thought it was great.

Can you, or someone, help me create a template csv file(s) that could be manually filled instead of getting the data from an MLS export?

I was not trying to cause you headache. There is a new tool from the for membership and you can find people ask questions about those other things here.

So let me understand what you want.

You want to simulate membership files that will only have YM data? If so, I am not sure how the converter will work with records in some files that are not in the membership.csv. In essence you want to use the membership.csv file to filter what you need. I would use Excel to help with filtering the data, but you will not be able to use a saved file from Excel to pull into the converter. Off the top of my head, just don't have time to play with this, but sounds like you are willing.

One of the main problems with Excel is when it saves to CSV does it a more conventional way. The MLS system when they save to CSV adds an extra comma to the end of the file. This converter expects this. So it *might* be possible you edit in Excel save to CSV, then manually edit the CSV to add the trailing comma in and it might work. I would double check to ensure the data looks like the MLS export, Excel may have options to quote the values or not (it has been a while for me, so that is why I can't say off the top of my head).

There is possibly another approach if you edit in Excel, then open the new edited file in the converter I wrote for the Android version. This should show the data, but I have a feature that allows for removing sensitive data and saving it back to what is like the format of MLS. So it may be the easier way for you to get the file you need. Again, I am not sure if the converter for the legacy app will fail if you have data in the other files that does not exist in the membership.csv.

Hopefully this is helpful. I tend to want all members info for a calling directory, but understand might not want to sift through those records.

I can't see any way this would be possible for the Ward Tools app,
which depends on a holistic set of interrelated MLS exports for the
entire ward. The only thing I can think of is to use the sanitized
version of Ward Tools -- for the entire ward -- that excludes the
confidential fields

But from what I understand of your requirements, you really don't need
a Ward Tools app with all its functionality. All you want to end up
with is a single, browsable table with one record per YM, showing all
there is to show about each one. Then you can browse it on your
iPhone. Right?

I suggest that you ask your ward clerk to create a custom report in
MLS with all that data, or almost all of it, for each YM. Then that
simple report can be exported as a CSV file, to be loaded into the
spreadsheet tool of your choice. Surely you have such general-purpose
spreadsheet tools on your iPhone.

Thank you... sounds like it is over my head...

Thanks for the time that I had WT, it is a fantastic resource for those who need it.

One other thing I'll mention, which you may already be aware of, is that the church released an app on the iphone named LDS Tools.  It's not comparable to Ward Tools though because it is intended for any member of the church, but it may provide the functionality that you need.  It gives basic info about everyone within the ward and stake including callings.

Thank you... yes I have LDS Tools... but using it makes me miss WT.

Having the YM birthdays, when they were called to qrm positions, when it's time for their half-birthday interviews, etc is what I miss.

I hoped that there would be a way to create my own data file and load that to WT... but sounds like that is not an option.  As YM pres I don't need the whole wards confidential data, but it would be nice to have all it for the YM... I mean I do have the data... on paper... anyway.

Hmm, well there is one more idea... could someone in the support group create a tool that that would create a usable csv file from a properly set up excel file?

Thanks.

What do you mean to create a usable cave file for excel?

I have not used this product, but is at a fair price, where you can define your own database and enter your data http://www.database4iphone.com/.

If you are a Mac user then you may be familiar with Bento and there is an iPhone version for it http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/iphone.html

These may be just what you need.

Here are the column headers and a sample line for your CSV file:
"Indiv ID","Full Name","Preferred Name","MRN","HofH ID","HH Position","HH Order","Phone 1","Phone 2","E-mail Address","Street 1","Street 2","D/P","City","Postal","State/Prov","Country","2-Street 1","2-Street 2","2-D/P","2-City","2-Zip","2-State/Prov","2-Country","Ward Geo Code","Stake Geo Code","Sex","Birth","Baptized","Confirmed","Endowed","Rec Exp","Priesthood","Mission","Married","Spouse Member","Sealed to Spouse","Sealed to Prior",
"12","Last, Given","Name, Preferred","000-0000-0000","9","Head of Household","1","999-999-9999","","em...@email.com,","1000 Main St.","","","Anytown","99999","New york","United States","","","","","","","","","","Male","10 June 1900","10 June 1908","10 June 1908","10 June 1919","Sep 2012","High Priest","No","Married","Yes","Yes","No",

You should note that Excel won't work, because it will screw up the date formats.
