Attraction: North and South Marshall Mountains were once part of the
Manor of Leeds, one of the parcels of land retained by Lord Fairfax.
When he died in 1781, his lands were sold to a group of investors, one
of whom was John Marshall, who obtained the Manor of Leeds. (John
Marshall served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court
1801-1835.) Marshall's father, Thomas, has been a surveyor of Fairfax
lands with George Washington and had given the name Marshall to the
mountains. It should also be noted that John Marshall was a political
adversary of his cousin Thomas Jefferson. Much of the judicial system
of the United States owes its existence to Marshall .
All hikers will be offered four westerly views near the summit of
South Marshall Mountain.
