Our next outing will start at the western slope of the SNP. Hikers
will have a gentle climb up the Red Gate Fire Road with moderate and
long hikers splitting up at the AT. Moderate hikers will have a climb
of 2200' with an option to climb the more challenging Hawksbill and
come down the other side for an extra 600'. The long hikers will climb
about 3100'. Options available to hike on the AT from Stony Man
Overlook (6 miles) to Hawksbill or an out and back from Hawksbill.
Extra longs can add about 4 miles completing the Rose River Loop and
Fire Road.

May 18 (Sunday) Red Gate Fire Road to Upper and Lower Hawksbill Today
we will climb the Western side of the mountains in SNP. All hikers
will start walking on Rte. 687, take the Red Gate Fire Rd. and climb
to Fishers Gap. Long hikers will then take the Rose River Loop Trail,
turn left on Skyland Big Meadows Horse Trail and left on Access Trail
to Skyline Drive and Hawksbill upper parking, where they will take the
Upper Hawksbill Trail up to Hawksbill summit and go down on the Lower
Hawksbill Trail to the to the bus. Moderate hikers will take the AT
north at Fishers Gap to the Hawksbill parking lot. Est. miles: 11.2
