Dune 2000 is a real-time strategy video game, developed by Intelligent Games and published by Westwood Studios in 1998 for Microsoft Windows. It was later ported to the PlayStation in 1999.[4] It is a partial remake of Dune II, which is loosely based on Frank Herbert's Dune universe.[5] The story of the game is similar to Dune II, and is continued in Emperor: Battle for Dune.
The player commands of one of three Houses and must fight for control of the spice mélange on the planet Arrakis. The player harvests spice for 'solaris', the in-game currency, and uses the solaris to make units to supply their forces. Dune 2000 features an interface and gameplay similar to Command & Conquer: Red Alert, where unlike in Dune II, the player can control more than one unit at a time.
Like most real-time strategy games, the game map initially starts with a black fog of war covering the entire map, with an exception to units' line of sight. As the units explore the map, the fog is removed for the duration of the mission, allowing the player to observe activity in those regions even if they do not have any units with line of sight to them. Like Dune II, the player may construct concrete before placing buildings. In Dune II, all buildings would deteriorate regardless, but the concrete foundations slowed the process. However, in Dune 2000, the buildings do not deteriorate over time when built in their entirety on concrete.
Peter Suciu of AllGame gave the PC version four-and-a-half stars out of five, saying that "for fans of the original game, or those who like a real-time challenge, Dune 2000 is an instant classic".[29] However, Glenn Wigmore of the same website gave the PlayStation version three-and-a-half stars out of five: "With smooth visuals, superb sound, a plethora of gameplay modes, strategy and replay value, Dune 2000 is a real winner. It also makes great use of the various PlayStation peripherals, making for a well rounded experience".[30]
I recently got the urge to play Dune 2000 again. I successfully installed it in my Windows XP laptop. Everything was working fine until the opening video was over. Once I got into the game menu and the actual game, the screen became shifted so far that it split, with the left 2/3rds being on the far right and the remaining right 1/3rd on the far left. If I move my mouse cursor in towards the right edge of my screen, the mouse will actually go past the edge and reappear on the left side of my screen.
Unfortunatly, the compatability with XP and dune 2000 is a little shaky, the reason the screen isnt fully observed is because the game does not use the monitors resolution, instead has its own, and when started it will be disoriented. The best thing is to download the full game from a local website like nahoo.com
Can you give us some more details about the crash? Is there any error message? What windows? Does it happen in the campaign or online? What are your settings in dune2000config? Does it happen randomly while playing or when you press a certain button?
exact same error.. dune2000.exe was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022) I have no idea why, I have tried reinstalling it 3 times now, tried -just- the game, tried the game + cutscenes + extra's, nothing works, just this error over and over
Ok one, gotta thank you a ton, this did help, somehow my avast was blocking it and not telling me it was blocking it, turning avast off let the game launch properly.. but now the issue is on the cutscenes which I let it install, I only get about 1/3 of the screen being used and all it shows is dark purples/black squares and a static-effect, so somethings gone wrong and Im not sure what and also now twice, the game just freezes and can't be closed thanks to fucking windows 10 refusal to let you bring up task manager while the crashing program is still crashing -.-
Install the Universal Extractor (v1.6.1).
Run it and select the SETUP.Z archive from the CD at \DUNE2000\SETUP\
Change the extraction location to, for example, your standard games folder.
If asked, pick the i3comp extraction method and press OK. This should give 2 folder; API and DUNE
Go to the newly created DUNE\Data\ folder and paste from the CD these folders: MISSIONS, MUSIC and MOVIES
Now run d2k106us.exe (to update the game). You need to manually paste in the DUNE folder location to unzip to.
If you did it correctly the DUNE folder will now contain a D2KPATCH_README_106.TXT file.
Lastly paste the FunkyFresh files into the DUNE folder and overwrite the EXE file.
This is the gruntmods edition of Dune 2000 which allows it to be compatible with newer versions of Windows. All credit goes to them and of course Intelligent Games and Westwood Studios for bringing us this amazing game. Go to and donate to them if you are able to!
Dune2000 is trying to initialize 640x400 and failing. Westwood's C&C games on windows would usually have a letterboxed 640x480 compatibility option in there for that situation, as not all DirectX display drivers give that mode.
I have installed and tested Dune with v1.02 patch applied. I ran Dune2000.exe with and without the -g option, and I tried out all 3 house campaigns @10 minutes each of mining spice. I didn't experience any problems running the game.
Thank you very much for trying.
For my part, I have not advanced; I know the game crashes but the PC is not crashed. I can go back to windows 98se and in task manager I get the message "Dune 2000" not responding.
ala_borbe: thanks for advice but I am running PC computers since 1995 and I know basic rules & checks.
No issue with VGA câbles. I got 280 DOS games and more than 100 windows games running flawlessly on this computer.
Dune 2000 seems plagued with issues for those who want to run it on a modern machine. For some reason, if I try to run it as per usual, it flickers like there's a bad refresh issue... not really the problem but that's the symptom.
My goal is to try and resolve the issue by running it in a window. The problem is that if I run the game with the executable(?) that everyone seems to be using (dune2000.dat), all I get is a black screen. If I run it with the actual .exe (dune2000.exe) then I get a black window with an even smaller game screen... we're talking 4 inches across at the most.
Dune 2000 seems to work pretty well using the attached configuration.
I don't know if you're familiar with export configuration files, so I'll repeat the instructions:
1) download and save the export file "Dune 2000.dxw"
2) Use the DxWnd File->Import menu command and pick the export file up
3) Now you shoud have Dune 2000 in your task list. Right click on it and select modify
4) change both the Path and Launch fields to reflect the game paths in your machine (the export file registers my own configuration...)
5) Save and run the game.
If everything works fine, you'll have a 800x600 window 50 pixels away from the top left corner of the desktop. If you're not interested in running it windowed, my suggestion is to set "Keep aspect ratio" and "Desktop" or "Desktop work area" position. If you have a powerful pc, you may also try to increase quality with the bilinear filter by checking the DirectX "fast 2x bilinear" or "full bilinear" options.
If you still have problems, please let me know: I'll teach you how to activate logs to let me understand what is happening.
have not tried other emulators as i don't have a need to. it was either Gruntmods or run on a proper retro PC. although, there are instructions on how to install/patch it for 64-bit Windows on pcgamingwiki: _2000 if you want to do it manually.
Hi, I actually made a universal installer for Dune 2000. It asks for the original CD-ROM, detects the language and installs the appropriate 1.06 update as well as a DirectDraw wrapper. No mod will be installed : the goal was to bring back the original look and feel of the game. You can see it here and download it through the description :
Dune 2000 is a Windows 95/98 game from 1998. It is a partial remake of Dune II, but it has a very much improved control set and of course improved graphics. If you own the original CD of the game, it should install and run fine on a 32 bit version of Windows. If you have a 64 bit operating system, you will have a hard time installing the game, as the installer is a 16 bit program. However, there's a way to install and play the game from CD, you can find instructions here.
