The pressurised paraffin lamp, also known as panchlait (Petromax), is used as a symbol to highlight the transition of villagers from darkness to light. The caste divisions, class issues are beautifully embedded in the film, much like the original story.
Set in a rural backdrop, Panchlait is the story of a village where electricity connection has not reached yet and a new invention brings light to the lives of the residents. Patromax, or panchlait in the vernacular language, is an LPG light that proves to be a better version of the traditional lantern.
