Any tabs & applications running on your computer will take up some bandwidth and slow down your internet speed. How to increase internet speed on Windows 10? Please close all the unnecessary tabs that are opening in your browsers. Besides, you should close background apps and the applications that are occupying much of your internet bandwidth.

Your web browser can accumulate temporary files, cookies and cached data overtime, which can slow down internet speeds. Clearing out your browser cache on a regular basis can help to remove unnecessary data, which can help to boost internet speed.

When Windows software is outdated, it can lead to compatibility and performance issues. Ensuring that your Windows operating system is up to date, can help to optimize system performance and speed up internet connection.

Windows 10 comes by default with several background processes that carry out quiet updates, and which can have a significant impact on your internet speed. So significant that surfing the web or downloading files may become frustrating.

Another built-in Windows feature that can hurt your internet speed is the Windows Update delivery. To speed up Windows Updates without overloading its own servers, Microsoft sends update files on your computer to a P2P file sharing server which other users can access.

As you probably know, the latest Windows installments automatically grab drivers for different components and devices, including Wi-Fi adapters. Windows 10 does this too, using a repository of drivers.

Most of the time, Windows 10 detects the Wi-Fi adapter correctly and grabs the right driver. But sometimes, these drivers are not ideal for your wireless network adapter. They may affect its performance or limits its functionality, which could take its toll on your internet speed.

Also, keep an eye on how apps running in the background use bandwidth by opening the Resource Monitor following the steps above. Sometimes the culprits are not always obvious. You need to watch and wait.

Have you tried the tips above yet? Can you notice a significant improvement in your Windows 10 internet speed? What better way to test your internet speed than by browsing the other articles on Windows 10 on our site? Enjoy!

Before we begin, if you think your slow internet or download speed is a result of your device and not your internet connection, check out our guides to speeding up your PC, optimizing your Mac, or getting your Android or iPhone to run faster. Now let's learn how to increase your internet speed.

If the internet is slow on your computer or laptop but works well on your phone or another device, then unnecessary background programs could be hogging your bandwidth and bogging down your internet connection. Stopping these background programs and quitting unused applications can help speed up your connection speeds.

Device drivers and firmware power your devices and make sure they work as intended. Unfortunately, stock firmware programs for routers and drivers from your Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters are rarely optimized or error-free. Check for software or driver updates to address bugs and improve performance.

Follow the steps to download the firmware updates. I was able to easily fix several internet speed issues and connection drops after updating both the drivers on my Windows machine and the firmware of my router.

An internet signal map of your home will let you know where to expect slow download speeds or even connection drops, so make sure to put your router in a place in your home that lets you optimize the internet speed for all your connected devices.

To prevent this from happening, use security software like Avast One that will scan your computer from top to bottom, identifying and removing any malware or other threats. Plus, Avast One features a suite of performance-optimization tools to ensure your computer runs smoothly.

To prevent this from happening, use security software like Avast Free Antivirus that will scan your computer from top to bottom, identifying and removing any malware or other threats. Plus, Avast One features a host of other advanced security tools to ensure your computer runs safely and smoothly.

Restart your computer

Turning off your computer and restarting it can help fix any electrical issues with your device or tasks that are stuck are now slowing down your download speeds.

Close unnecessary apps and programs

If unnecessary programs or background processes are hogging bandwidth, your download speeds may suffer. Close unnecessary tasks and see if that helps.

Download one file at a time

Downloading multiple files at once can overwhelm your system. Rather than downloading many files at once, download files separately and you might see your overall performance pick up.

Scan for viruses

Viruses and other forms of malware like spyware and Trojans often run processes without your knowledge, drastically slowing down your computer and potentially siphoning off bandwidth. Protect your device with the best antivirus software you can find.

Update drivers and firmware

Updating the software that makes your hardware tick helps to fix bugs and ensure that your computer and internet router are running smoothly. A dedicated driver updater will take care of it automatically.

Clear cookies

Cookies are designed to make your browsing more seamless, but if your browser cache is too cluttered with cookies, your performance will suffer. Freeing up space by deleting browser cookies can help your browser work faster.

Testing your internet speed and performing speed checks periodically can help you identify and fix a slow or bad connection. Run an internet speed test before you try to increase your internet speed, and then again after, to see if the changes you made worked.

Poor internet connection speeds can be caused by a range of issues, including too many apps running, too much distance between your device and router, a clogged hard drive, too many devices on the same connection, or even malware. Often, a combination of issues will slow your internet connection.

Move even closer to your router

A laptop is much more portable than a desktop, so position your laptop as close to the Wi-Fi router as possible, or move to a place that offers the best signal strength.

I've been having this issue for so long now! For some reason, my internet is blazing fast until I install Hamachi. Certain website downloads are affected but others aren't. for instance, downloading a zip file from "downloads.oneplus.com" WITHOUT Hamachi shows 3 minutes left. AFTER installing Hamachi, that same file now says 20 Minutes.... Same issue happens with Microsoft's download servers, when trying to download the Windows 10 iso, Hamachi just DESTROYS the download speed when my internet is more than capable of downloading large files quickly!

@DainisLV @Kotala It's not ideal - but I mutually block all traffic between peers that I know are on the same LAN. This forces the traffic to use the physical LAN connection instead of the Hamachi VPN connection. It means the peers on the same LAN always appear as "red" to each other, but it gets around the slow traffic between machines.

Before installing Hamachi my internet speeds are showing 200Mb/s. After installing it I constantly get 60Mb/s. I have uninstalled Hamachi but nothing changes, is there a setting somewhere that can resolve this?

If your upload speeds are faltering, check with your internet provider about what speed your plan provides. You may need to upgrade to a faster plan or switch providers. Try to stagger your internet usage, so multiple tasks aren't competing for bandwidth. Also, make sure you're using a router that broadcasts on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands; there may be less interference on the 5 GHz band. If Wi-Fi is your only option, try measures to boost your Wi-Fi signal.

As on a Windows PC, conduct a speed test to see if your internet is slow or something is wrong with your setup. If your speed tests fine, many of the same tips listed above for Windows PCs will work for you too. Try moving closer to the router, switching to the 5 GHz band, and making sure you're not performing multiple tasks. If browsing is slow, be sure to close unused tabs in your browser.

I was getting less than half the speed I was paying for (150Mbps instead of 400Mbps) for more than a year and had tried everything from constantly calling tech support to swapping out cables and trying other routers.

If that doesn't work for you, you can try to:Press Windows key on your keyboard, then type CMD on search, right-click on the result and choose Run as Admin.Type these following commands to reset your internet/network settings:

I had a similar problem during an scp copy over my LAN under Windows 10. I have gigabit adapters on both ends. Factoring in scp overhead, I should have been getting a transfer rate between 50-70 MB/sec--wasn't getting that though.

For me, it was the "Remote Access Connection Manager" service, and I've now shut it down. Download speed doubled in safe mode. So I took a screenshot of "safe" services and compared it to what services are running normally then started turning them off, checking the first half, then the remaining half, and so on, doing Speedtest.net after each batch. It was not just slowing down measured speeds, at times of high traffic even my typing would freeze for short intervals. It pays off to disable services that don't help in any awy.
